i know its like, kinda cringe ngl, but i cant express how happy this statistic makes me.

almost every single fandom will have some form of shipping at its core, which really sucks if you're not into shipping!! I'm sure pretty much everyone who reads fan fiction (aspec or not) can relate to filtering out the tags you dont like and being left with a fraction of works left, because it happens all the time if you like reading gen!

I really like project hail mary for various reasons, but a big reason is that it doesnt rely on romance to give its characters strong personal relationships. Grace's lack of romantic relationships is seen as a flaw, something that makes him a coward or expendable, but the story PROVES that he DOESNT need a romantic relationship to be happy, to have a fulfilling life, and to be worth something! Hes a 50-something year old man, living on an alien planet with his best friend, entirely single, and its the best life he could have. Okay i got a little bit lost in the sauce there but the POINT is, I love gen fic and Im absolutely ecstatic that i found a fandom that agrees.

I love watching PHM in an aroace lens. I love how Grace is a main character with no romantic partner and no real desire to find one. I love how the story doesn't present Grace as lacking something fundamental bc he doesn’t want a romantic partner. I love how this makes him seem expendable to Stratt bc he has no connections, and thus no one to mourn him. (And here, I could argue that Stratt was looking for any justification for herself, and that she knew she had to make him go, and that she had to ignore that maybe she would be the one to mourn him.)

I love how the story still presents it as an injustice that Grace was forced against his will to die on a suicide mission, even without these strong relationships. I love how the story presents this as an evil that still must be done to save humanity. I love how Grace finds his courage not in a lover but in a friend. I love how he turns back from safety and certainty to make sure his friend lives. I love how the story ends. I love how Grace finds fulfillment not in romantic partnership but in friends.
