I must express to you all just how trippy it is as an Icelander to watch videos from London or Berlin with whole crowds screaming along with “Kapítalistar andskotans!” You never hear Icelandic spoken outside of Iceland by non-Icelanders, ever, yet there’s suddenly a full venue of people yelling about capitalism in my language. Hatari is magical.

Hey, could you perhaps tell us what the article titled "Ójöfn laun meðlima Hatara: Hallar verulega á konurnar" is saying? It's on some (presumably) Icelandic online news source called dv. I would link but tumblr hates links.
The article in question is here. The headline says “The unequal pay of the members of Hatari: The women significantly worse off”.
Basically, every year DV publishes the incomes of notable Icelanders, as calculated based on public tax records. Then they mine it for articles. Sometimes this exposes legitimate excesses of capitalism. This… is not one of those times.
Here, the story is that the women of Hatari are paid significantly less than the guys (by which they mean Matthías, Klemens and Einar; they’re for some reason counting the girls but not Andrean as part of the band, possibly because they just forgot Andrean existed). The problem here is that… this is actually a total non-story, for several reasons:
1) Of course Ástrós and Sólbjört would have been paid less for Hatari gigs than Matthías/Klemens/Einar, because not all Hatari gigs include them at all.
2) Also, they are dancers, and while it’s very cool how much the Hatari fandom appreciates and includes the dancers, it makes pretty good sense that they would be paid less for their work with Hatari than Matthías/Klemens/Einar get, given officially they’re the band, and they’re not only performing on the stage but also the ones writing/arranging the actual songs that they’re playing. (Now, if Andrean were getting paid more than Ástrós and Sólbjört are per gig, there’d be good cause to side-eye it.)
3) But also, these numbers are completely meaningless, because these are not the amounts that they’re being paid specifically for their work with Hatari at all! These are totals: remember, this is being calculated from their tax returns. Einar is shown as having more than double the pay that Matthías and Klemens get… because he is also in a whole other band which is very popular, and all DV knows is the total money that he made (which they then convert into an average monthly wage). Similarly, any other jobs the others are doing would also be included in these numbers. This is presumably why Ástrós is being listed as getting more than Sólbjört according to these numbers; there’d be no sensible reason for that to be the case for their Hatari work.
(Incidentally, wow, they are being paid pennies. All of them except member-of-two-different-popular-bands Einar are well under the Icelandic minimum wage for full-time work, and Einar’s total from his two popular bands is respectable but, like, way less than I get paid as a programmer.)
It’s worth noting that the amounts being discussed are for last year, so this is definitely not indicative of their current situation. Hatari (and Vök) have definitely taken off this year so I desperately hope they’re getting a bigger payout.
Because holy shit, that’s literal pennies what the hell how are they surviving.
