* important headcanons to consider.
can they use chopsticks : Yes, he can use chopsticks and will use them when appropriate (as opposed to swapping to a fork). He tries to be culturally conscientious as to not offend people.
what do they do when they can’t sleep : Depends — sometimes he will sit up and read, or get additional work done (there is always work to be done). Sometimes he’ll go for a jog or work out in the Garden gym. On rare occasions he’ll turn the TV on, but for the most part he finds late-night broadcasts to be tedious.
what would they impulse buy at the grocery store : Any vegetable he isn’t familiar with — he enjoys challenging himself to expand his culinary horizons. Also seasonal produce if it looks good he will pick up.
what order do they wash things in the shower :
He’s a top to bottom kind of guy for the most part: Hair first, face (including any shaving), then body. Yes he cleans between his toes.
what’s their coffee order :
Either a flat white (espresso with steamed milk) or if a more simple option is required, a coffee with two creams — no sugar.
what sort of apps would they have on their smartphone :
Minimal. Extremely minimal. He doesn’t tend to kill time on his phone much, so if he has anything superfluous on his phone it’s likely because he’s been made to download it by another person (and likely forgets he has it.)
how do they act around children :
In his canon verse Squall is pretty stoic around children — he does not dislike them, but tends to automatically assume most kids would not want anything to do with him due to his withdrawn countenance. However, when children do interact he is patient and tends to treat them respectfully as small adults as opposed to doting over them in immature ways.
In his XV verse Squall often winds up taking care of the children around Meldacio HQ while the Hunters are out. He is much more laid back and engaging due to his upbringing, and adopts a “it takes a village” mentality to childcare when needed.
what would they watch on tv when they’re bored and nothing they really like is on :
As stated previously he doesn’t spend much time watching TV if there is nothing on he’s particularly engaged in — he doesn’t usually have time to waste, and if for some reason he does, he’d pick any number of other things than TV.
But for the sake of the question, he’d pick some sort of documentary to run idly in the background.

-Ohhhh you’re going down Amicitia. That jacket belongs here with me, with or without you in it. I’ll be waiting.
monicaelshett:
This wasn’t the first time she had gone without lunch, definitely wouldn’t be the last. Chastised herself plenty when the walk home always left herself drained or ill. So it wasn’t really a stretch when she felt as though Squall turning up was her saving grace.
She couldn’t help but scoff at his words, taking half the sandwich from the bag and returning it to him. He wouldn’t get much out of her even if he could. From her knowledge - and from what she had overheard from passing students - exams had changed since she took them last. Even if that were the case and she couldn’t help him, she could at the very least made sure Squall ate. “Had I known you were about, I would’ve done the same. Luckily for you, I don’t mind most toppings or fillings.” After all, this was his meal that she had taken half of.
“Heading back to study, I’m assuming?” Monica gestured beside her with a free hand for him to sit, curiosity written plainly over her face. “How is that going?”
Even now she worried over him more than herself, reluctantly taking back the other half of his sandwich; he knew better than to fight her on it. Instead he sat with a small sigh beside her on the bench, resting the bag on his lap and pulling out the other half of the sandwich to enjoy in tandem. “Yeah, that was the plan. Some of the others wanted to meet up tonight at the Lucky Cactuar but I think it’s probably best I keep my nose to the grindstone,” he admitted, lowering his gaze a little sheepishly. He did generally well in his studies, showing a natural aptitude in some things more than others, but it was clear to anyone who cared enough to look that his passion was in combat training and all that went with it. Sometimes this included interpersonal feuds that he got stuck in intentionally or not; such was the plight of someone who made friends and more recently dated across social borders. His most recent round of discipline hadn’t left him as much time as he might have liked for school work.
“Test coming up on Tuesday. After that I should be in the clear for the time being,” he said, as much to reassure himself as anything. He adjusted the bread of his sandwich before lifting in brief cheers to her. “Wish me luck.”
He chewed in relative quiet for a moment before chiming in once more with a glance in her direction. “Why out of the Citadel today? Figured they would have needed you around.”
( @monicaelshett continued from x )
It was not a suck-up, despite how it might have seemed. People could say what they wished – he knew what it looked like, and didn’t much care whether outsiders understood the thoughts of a boy who had grown up being watched over and cared for by the very guardsmen and women that he served now.
He had known Monica was out on city patrol, further away from her usual haunt, but had not expected to run into her on his walk. He spotted her sitting on a bench a few yards off, seemingly resting, and considered leaving her to her peace and quiet, but it dawned on him that perhaps she had fallen into the trap many of the upper ranks seemed to fall prey to: not enough food or rest. He glanced down at his own lunch – a sandwich tucked into a white paper bag and a bottle of water – before opting to step in and offer it down to her.
“If I was I certainly wouldn’t be using it to get a leg up in the exams,” he jested with a small curl of his lips. “Would have asked you what you wanted if I thought we’d cross paths. I won’t be offended if you pick off the toppings,” he reassured, handing her the sealed bottle as well before stuffing his hands into his pockets and taking a quick glance around. “I was on my way home and decided to detour through the park. Mind if I join you for a few minutes?”

"For fuck's sake."
The oath comes out louder than he intends, but it's not like anyone can hear him swearing up a storm over the chaos outside. Seifer ducks back down (perfect timing, too, considering the sweep of bullets that rips through the far wall of their hiding spot, and two seconds earlier would have left a Seifer-shaped stain along with all those new ventilation holes.
"We're gonna have to get out of here," he tells Squall, because stating the obvious is also a thing that he needs to do right now, apparently. "Can you walk yet?"
He fucking hopes so, considering Squall's downed the last potion either of them have between them.
There's a distant scream, a boom-- he recognizes the former as Garden's incoming aerial assault siren, and it's easy to assume that the latter is the concussion of a bomb hitting a target.
Hope they've got better aim than intel, he seethes, Hyperion heavy in one hand, slick with blood.
He's got Hyperion, Squall's got Lionheart... Maybe a couple of bullets between them. Maybe. He doesn't know what Squall has junctioned, or if he's exhausted that, or had his GF node ripped off on their mad dash across the battlefield.
Seifer's got his magic, and a stupid idea dawning on him as another blast rocks the tin shack that was probably someone's gardening shed before the town became a war zone. One more, and the whole thing'll probably come crashing down around them.
He hauls Squall to his feet, getting them both to the door, peeking around the frame to assess the situation (and quite frankly, the situation sucks.) The terrible idea gets worse-- he breathes, trying to keep the heat of his magic at bay before it gives into this ultimate reckless impulse.
"Forget walking-- you're gonna have to run," he tells Squall. "And don't you dare fucking look back until you've met up with the rest of the squad."
A pause, Hyperion's tip tapping on the concrete floor.
"Well, you'd better come back, too, because I'm not dying for your stupid ass."
Eyes track the rumbling path of a Galbadian tank, crushing over a row of neat front lawns. Seifer counts to three, the tank rolls out of sight, and he shoves Squall to the left before he goes right.
"I'm right here, you assholes!" he bellows, firing off his last shot before Hyperion comes down into a dramatic arc, and it causes the chaos he was hoping for-- all attention of the enemy is squarely on him.
(And to think, once upon a time he'd led this fucking army.)
Seifer grins, bloody and feral, and lets the bullets come toward him, embracing the assault with open arms as he mentally undoes that last tether that holds his power in check-- never let it go, you'll sink like a boat, Edea had told him once upon a time.
She'd be so pissed at him now.
There's nothing that prepares you for this, nothing at all-- he's only ever done this once or twice, just enough to know he can; the fire rips out of his palms, up his arms and shoulders and hair and for a second, there's a theory that it might not work, and then every last ounce of power he's got burning in his bones erupts like a supernova.

The curses of the other fell on deaf ears, the frenzied throb of his own pulse and the drone of bullet fire blocking out all but the most direct of words. It also didn’t help that the bullet wound in his leg was in the process of sealing over bit by bit, flesh and sinew knitting and fusing with wisps of healing green steam until it pushed the bloodied lead bullet out of him into the dust. He bit back a groan, head dropping with a dull thud against the wall he sat propped against, exhaling a breath of relief as the sting began to subside and the blood stopped flowing so freely from the wound, the numbing effect of the potion washing through him like a cool trickle – not entirely healed, but it would do as a stopgap measure to help them press on.
Only then did he open his eyes to look up at the blonde, catching the urgent question and nodding faintly in response, “yeah.” Reaching out beside him he grabbed up his Revolver, flicking open the barrel in a moment of mental clarity and checking the bullets left inside it — a few blast rounds, but the rest were merely concussive. Not helpful for covering a quick departure. His tongue clicked against the back of his teeth in frustration, flipping the barrel shut and reaching up for the hand that extended to him.
“Not like I have much of a choice otherwise,” he muttered to the man with a sullen look by way of communicating that the ammunition on his end was in low supply, leaning his shoulder just inside the door frame to peek around it to the situation outside. There was a narrow margin for error with the enemy closing in. He was assessing, calculating the best route through the streets and houses based on his knowledge of the area, but before he concluded Seifer was warning him to come back for him.
What? Why would I…-
He gave Seifer a confused look just as he was being pushed, urged out into the open, ushered to run back toward the safety of their backup some few blocks away. He staggered, wheeling around to watch in shock as the blonde rush in to face down three tanks and the remaining battalion by himself.
“What the hell are you doing?!” he blurted without thinking, completely ignoring the other’s instruction not to look back – how could he not? Was he supposed to just let the self-sacrificing idiot throw himself under the wheels of a tank while he ran for his life? That wasn’t part of the deal, there was no way Seifer could hold out on his own until Squall returned – skilled or no. He had taken a single step back in his direction when a wave of heat seared his cheeks as if the door of a fiery kiln had been opened. He squinted, lifting his arm to shield himself from the worst of it, watching as flames began to lick the other’s fingertips, a sight he was accustomed to during many years of training with the taller male. But what set this particular instance apart was the way those flames grew, traveled, consumed. Realizing what was happening Squall’s eyes widened, barely catching his footing as he turned to sprint away from Seifer and throw himself behind the crumpled hull of an overturned car.
He’d managed shelter just in time for the fiery nova to erupt, causing the car at his back to quake and blister. He could smell hot metal, burning fumes, arms lifting to cover his ears against the blasts of exploding gasses and ammo. Chaos reigned around him for a cacophonous moment before all fell eerily quiet by comparison – no bullets. No missiles. No shouts.
He lowered his arms slowly from his head, glancing back over his shoulder to listen a bit closer for any hint as to the outcome of the explosion, but none were readily apparent. He raised out of his crouch just enough to peer around the hull of the car, careful not to touch the hot metal that still glowed from the blast, the soles of his boots sticking to the asphalt a bit as he shuffled his stance.
What in Hyne’s name…?
Headcanon - Junctioning Sickness
Junctioning Sickness is a term used to describe the negative side-effects experienced after being junctioned for too long. The severity and nature of the side effects are dependent on the type of magic used in what manner and for how long. It may also be used to describe the side effects experienced by those who are junction-incompatible.
The memory loss associated with long-term GF use has also been passed off as a form of Junctioning Sickness, but the parasitic effect GFs have on the brain begs for further qualification that, as of yet, has not been categorized.
Headcanon - Junction Junkie
Squall is what is colloquially known as a “Junction Junkie,” a term used to describe a person who relies heavily on the effects of junctioned para-magic. The magic in and of itself is not addicting, but the feelings associated with it, as well as the sickness that accompanies the unjunctioning of it after long-term use leads many to become “addicted” in their attempts to avoid the withdrawal-like symptoms.
Due to his contract as Commander of Balamb Garden requiring him to remain junctioned at all times for safety and preparedness reasons, Squall has become junction-dependent, especially to Esuna which counteracts his fatigue both from being overworked, and from being constantly tapped-in to the junction system.

novuscaelum:
There’s a quick yet eager nod on the young Prince’s part indicating that he had indeed behaved. Sort of. It had been a rather interesting time in Squall’s absence. No matter how much Novus waited for the man to come back, he was always told by the others that Squall was out and would be back soon. Day after day he waited even with little plastic cups of water to give his Crownsguard bestie (well one of them besides Prompto) in case he grew thirsty but always ended up drinking them himself before going off to do something else.
“You were gone for forever. I thought you weren’t gonna come back and then I’d have to ask Dad if I can keep your spot so nobody else would take it.” Novus explained. He was glad the other had returned unharmed though since he’d gotten a glimpse of a training session before and it seemed brutal. “Are you gonna go away again soon? Can I go with you next time so we can both go on a business trip like my Mom or Dad does?”
It was clear Novus had been genuinely concerned about him, and the earnest childlike thoughtfulness caused his chest to clench with both appreciation and guilt for having made him worry. “Thanks for having my back. I’ve got some pretty big shoes to fill, though, you think you’d be up for it?” he stated, mostly jokingly, reaching out to ruffle his hair gently.
The request that followed, however, gave him pause. Crownsguard business, especially the kind that pulled him away from the Citadel, was rarely safe or casual enough to bring a child along, but it seemed a pity to disappoint the boy further with bad news. So he hummed quietly to himself in consideration, eyes narrowing.
“How about this — we’ll plan a business trip, you and me. Somewhere you’d like to go. Does that sound fair?” he tilted his head. He’d have to get permission from the boy’s parents first, but somehow it seemed far easier than convincing them to let their son tag along on official Crownsguard business.

@dincghiranze asked: “on a scale of one to ten, how do you feel about nachos right now?”
Squall finished fastening the case to his gunblade, a half-smile curling at his lips as he brushed a few specks of dirt off the top, turning blue eyes up to the silver-haired male.
“In general? Or is this an invitation?” he stood the case upright and used it to prop up his weight, folding his arms atop it. “Last time you invited me out for a meal you cornered me and held my sandwich hostage trying to get info about the Amicitias and the Crownsguard’s stance on the war,” he pointed out, lifting a brow.

@veneficious asked: “there’s something wrong with me.” -rinoa
It was a vague comment from somewhere behind him, pausing in his step to turn and face her with a curious and uncertain look on his face. He thought at first she might not have been feeling well — something from lunch or maybe fatigue — but seeing the look on her face he knew it to be more serious than that; more complicated.
“What do you mean?” he questioned aloud, searching her face for some clue as to her thoughts, shifting his weight over one leg.
@novuscaelum said: Novus had heard from another Guard that Squall was sick and immediately wanted to take care of the other himself. After inquiries for his address, the little boy was at his friend's door, knocking with a plastic bag in his hands. "Squall!" the four-year-old called as the attendant stood behind him keeping watch for any signs of danger. "I'm here to make you better!" Now to wait and see if the care would be accepted or rejected...
Squall had been adding lemon to a warm mug of honey and water when he heard a small knocking at his front door. Curious. . . he wasn’t expecting visitors. Monica knew he was sick and likely told the rest, though they never really bothered with him anyway.
He padded in socked feet to the door, flipping the lock and opening it, finding himself face-to-face with a man he’d seen a few times around the Citadel — another attendant to the crown. But why was he here?
The confusion had just begun to color his pale face when he heard the little voice from below call out to him, blue eyes dropping to Novus and his little plastic bag. He blinked, bewildered before a small half-smile crossed his lips, leaning his shoulder into the door frame, shaking his head.
“Novus, did you come all the way here because you heard I was sick? Do your parents know?” he glanced to the attendant with an apologetic look for the man having been dragged along with the boy’s whims.

@evcryopeneye asked: “why do you have that look on your face?” ( From Selphie )
Squall considered himself a fairly self-aware person in most instances, but this was a moment he’d apparently lost track of his placid expression, watching Zell a table over from them devour his food seemingly without breath. He didn’t understand how someone could eat like this, bite after bite going down the hatch without pause. It made him feel a little queasy and as much seemed to show on his face, commented on by his lunch companion.
He quickly wiped the expression, shaking his head in denial at first as he lifted his drink to his mouth and busied himself sucking on the straw, but the troubling marvel of a display before him was difficult to let slide without comment.
“How is he still alive?” he muttered half to her and half to himself under his breath, forking at his food and trying desperately not to be put off his meal.

@deptofgunsandwomen asked: “i know I haven’t been what you needed, but i’m here, and i wanna help.” -laguna
This was getting old. It didn’t seem to matter how many times and for how many different reasons Squall was around the Estharian president, the man seemed to want to make it about making up for lost time, assuaging some sense of guilt he felt for years lost. Squall had tried to explain to him that he didn’t want it, this forced relationship between them. Blood meant nothing in a world where it was so easily spilled and betrayed, and as far as Squall was concerned they were little more than acquaintances.
It wasn’t personal. He didn’t blame Laguna for the past — why would he? There was no saying what sort of life he would have led had the man come back for him. What sort of world it would be if he hadn’t become a SeeD. Would someone else have stepped into his shoes? Stopped the time witch? Or would time have compressed, all of them doomed to live and die under her reign? He wasn’t foolish enough to think himself special. The only one for the job. Someone else would have gotten it done, he was sure, but wondering over what-ifs was a senseless waste of time, as was blaming a man he’d never met for depriving him of things he had no concept of: family.
But personal or no, having to caretake the other’s feelings was a inconvenient, including him in his business overcomplicated. His first reflex was to refuse him, politely, but there was nothing more pathetic than watching a grown man mope about deprived of purpose, and so he would relent.
“Fine. Rinoa’s appointment finishes up in a couple of hours — if you could take me to Odine’s lab to pick her up I’d appreciate it. Public transport isn’t ideal for her,” or him for that matter; ever since his accident at the Centran ruins those high-speed tube rides made him a little queasy, but he wasn’t about to complain for his own sake.
