@shouldbestudyingmd and @tsg2k19, this made me think of you. Not because either of you talk about wearing leggings and crop tops to class, but just all the comments about medical school! I don’t know anything about how people dress, but I am assuming that going to class in whatever is fine??
I wrote a whole post in response to this and then lost it. So I’ll just say it succinctly and hope no one attacks me for this non-nuanced take:
Where I trained, there was no strict dress code for preclinical lectures. I often wore jeans, t shirts, etc. However, I would side eye someone who showed up in leggings and a crop top. Or pajamas. Or stained or torn clothes. Med school isn’t college. It’s professional school. And I think med students should have the wisdom to hold themselves to a certain standard of dress. Casual is fine if there’s no patient care involved, but that’s not the same thing as everything goes.

I presented on this (it was called “your brand” or something and was a lot of fun) at our grad business program orientations and mostly agree with above. In addition, it’s important to remember that your faculty are asked for recommendations and alumni donors are often in the building. Not to mention, your classmates will be your professional network. Professional school is not the same as undergraduate studies and should not be approached in the same way.
