something I love is the theme of youth carrying culture by transforming it.

the scene where past and future connect through dancing and music is, I would argue, the centerpiece of the film. we see twerking alongside pre-colonial dancing, where the modern and the ancient are equally profound.

as we see all these generations of the culture, I started thinking about how often parents scold children for how they dress, dance, talk, and make music. because, after all, the song that invites this intergenerational communion is about lying to your dad about loving the blues.

each generation transforming culture as they engage with it, is what actually keeps the culture alive.

repetition of tradition that dares not change anything, that views the tradition as separate from, and more sacred than, the people taking part in it, is how a culture dies.

this ties into the metaphor of the vampires too. vampires look exactly the same forever, and that's not life, it's death. the vampires (whiteness) wants to "preserve" culture by taking the people out of it. they want to own the practices of culture and kill the people who animate it.
