otogi still lives with his father in the main verse, and as such tends to spend as much time as possible away from home. while i do believe the man is probably no longer straight up abusive as he was during otogi’s childhood, i do imagine their relationship is undeniably strained, distant, and distinctly odd in a way that neither of them is certain how to approach. so they simply. don’t

i also go by the headcanon that otogi is gradually, as the years go by, being put into a caretaker position for his father, and that he’s not entirely complicit in this role change but does feel some sense of guilty responsibility (whether it’s genuine or something that’s been bred in him after a childhood of emotional abuse and manipulation is something he can’t quite figure out rip)

a small headcanon that otogi likes dark humor, but he’s also very conscious of how he comes across to people and what fits in with the image he’s trying to project and what doesn’t. in the end, otogi wants to be likable, even in spite of the aloof, vain personality he puts on, and he feels that jokes that are too dark or too mean-spirited don’t gain him that.

Without meaning to he began to wonder what this was all about. It didn’t look like Otogi was in turmoil. Maybe it was a game of some kind?

❝Don’t need to play tricks if you want my help. Just ask.❞

〘 △ 〙▹ ❝ It couldn’t have been THAT BAD… Right? ❞ HE ASKS, his question ringing with a tad uncertainty. Admittedly, his impression of the other was a bit of a blur. To see someone he believed to have such a confident aura SULKING, well… it just seemed strange! He wondered what could have gotten underneath Otogi’s skin, but of course, Ryou couldn’t bring himself to pry. Not intentionally, at least. 

Adjusting his hold on his schoolbag, he takes a brief moment to ponder. Not many people make their problems known to him, no matter how small they might be… But maybe it wouldn’t hurt to try and cheer someone else up for a change. Although, he’s not quite sure he’d be so good at it — but it’s worth a shot!

        ❝ It’s a bit odd to see you so down, Otogi-kun… Would getting a snack make you feel any better? ❞

Otogi doesn’t answer at first, still sullenly staring down at his hands, making a show of inspecting his nails as he tries to get a handle on his mood. After all, he believes it very much was ‘that bad’, but he doesn’t want to make more of a scene than he already has. And Ryou doesn’t have anything to do with it. There’s no reason to subject him to more complaining. It’s just a matter of shoving his annoyed pessimism away so he can take a breather and address his friend’s point.

He tosses his own bag over his shoulder with one final huff, resting his other hand on his hip, and clears his throat. He finally looks up to focus on the other’s face.
