My name is Kaitlin and I am an Undergraduate Geologist at The University of Cincinnati in Cincinnati, Ohio. I am headed in to my final year and because of that I needed to look into field camps for my Geology Capstone.
According to the Oxford Dictionary, field camp is defined as, “A residential program of scientific field work, especially for students”. In the focus of geology, a lot of field camps focus on mapping different geologic structures in several areas over a period of several weeks to a month, all with the end goal of interpreting our observations to piece together the geologic story of the region.
We learn valuable skills such as mapping, observing structures, identifying rock suites and minerals, proper communication among fellow geologists, how to properly write your observations in a field notebook, how to write scientific reports on your findings, how to use different field gear (clinometers, compasses, etc.), and most importantly how to become a successful and professional geologist.
Most students who attend field camp tend to work in a location that is completely new to them, which is what brings me to this side of the Internet…
I am doing my summer field camp at The University of St Andrews in Scotland!
With that being said, I plan on updating this blog with bits and pieces of my studies, adventures and experiences while abroad. So far it’s been nothing short of fantastic, and I know for a fact that things can only get better from here.
