Surprisingly, before being with Pearl, Gem had never made a habit of wearing necklaces. Yes, she loved collecting all sorts of cute accessories, but for some reason, the choice never came across her head. Now that Pearl has broken up with her, she still wears that matching necklace every single day: a silver pendant in the shape of a sun, with a pearlstone in the center: the birth stone of June and, well, Pearl's name.
Yet whenever Impulse asks about it, Gem always insists that it has absolutely nothing to do with her ex-girlfriend. The necklace suits her style, she just grabbed an accessory at random, she paid for it so of course she can wear it, it’s just an ordinary piece of jewelry with no special meaning, she swears she could easily buy a new one anytime…
In the end, Gem never bought a new necklace, and kept wearing the same one day after day.
Surprisingly, after breaking up with Gem, Pearl hasn’t worn a single necklace since. Yes, she used to love that kind of accessory, but ever since that green-eyed ex-girlfriend of hers, she hasn’t worn any from her collection. That moon-shaped necklace is made of green agate the birth stone of May and, of course, the color of Gem's eyes. It still sits right beside her pillow, just where she can grab it. Every morning when she wakes up, Pearl still instinctively reaches for it. But Gem has already broke up with her, so she always ends up spending five minutes convincing her half awake half asleep self not to wear it that day, considering putting it somewhere else and always forgetting to.
Her luck has gotten worse ever since they separated. The problem with putting stuff by your bed is that you tend to break them when you are sleeping, especially Pearl who has a bad sleeping habit. One morning she woke up with her necklace in her hand, and she was so startled that she accidentally broke it: one end of the necklace is still under her body, while she pulled on the other end hard.
This day can't get any unluckier, she thought as she stood in front of the repairing shop. Somehow, instead of just throwing the thing away, she came across the city to the place where she bought the pair-bought the one necklace, while missing the bus, got stuck in traffic, and then getting lost for the second time in the row.
As if the universe hates her and wants to prove her wrong, she bumps into someone who was walking out of the shop, and the necklace fragments fell to the ground. Pearl kneels down to pick them up, meeting the familiar green eyes of the stranger that she ran into:
Oh. This day could get worse.
