A very, very brief introduction to historical Hamgelica
Imma keep this real short because I'm lazy and it's late but most of the info is taken from "A Fatal Friendship" by Arnold Rogow (mostly the affair stuff), "War of two" by Sedgwick
Anyways, so here's the Hamgie stuff:
First off, there's quite a huge similarity between historical Lams and historical Hamgelica - mainly that Hamilton's son, omitted/crossed out many innuendos in both letters. Obviously, we can only guess what they said, but he seemed to have a knack for hiding his father's affairs lmao.
In 1789 during Angelica's return, from May to November Hamilton paid for many of the places to live for her nearby, which is very sweet of him, y'know, but not nessecarily romantic.
However, during a time in October, when Eliza was away in Albany there's a vacancy in her stay, meaning that there were no bills showing where she lived. Most historians agree on one thing - at that time Angelica stayed with Hamilton, while his wife away.
If there were ever an affair between them, it's believed that it was then. The theory is also supported by the fact that when the stay was over, their letters had a lot, and I mean A LOT of parts taken out my Alex's son (the one who was obsessed with hiding Hamilton's lovers lol)
If that wasn't enough, in that time period Hamilton was seen many times in public, with Angelica on his arm rather than Eliza.
This obviously sparked lots of gossip, many discussed that their public relationship was highly inappropriate, as well as made some late night innuendos between Hamgelica accour. Parties in this time period would go until the early morning, and Hamilton often didn't go home, rather staying in inns. We can only assume Angelica stayed with him, since it's unlikely a rich women such as herself would sleep on the street so many times, and probably stayed in Hamilton's room (since he only paid for one room, not two. Take what you want from that.)
And obviously, town rumours aren't valid sources, but Hamilton was in later life whispered to be a “double adulterer”, given the Reynolds affair.
That, along with the quite sweet and heartbreaking letter from Angie to Alex, right after she had left America to go back to her shitbag husband. (A snippet of which can be seen below)
"me voila mon tres cher bien amer et la pauvre coeur bien effilge de vous auvoir quitte [he i am, my dearest, very bitter and with a heavy heart to have left you]. Remember this yourself... May god ever love and protect you, prays your ever affectionate angelica, ever, ever yours..." - AS to AH
And that's only one of the many lovely & charming letters between Alexander to Angelica.
As some of you may have seen on my previous posts, they wrote pretty sweet stuff to each other, and although putting it all here would make it long & confusing, I'm planning on making a masterpost soon, and I'll link it here then so.
Many people are led to believe that Alexander and Angelica weren't very close in the romantic sense historically, and that Lin Manuel Miranda made it up for drama.
They even maybe had a kid, but that's very much a stretch and I'll talk about that later
