⌠ TOM ELLIS, 40, CIS-MALE, HE/HIM ⌡ welcome back to gallagher academy, HENRY “HAL” HARDY! originally hailing from BLACKTHORNE, this alum specializes in LINGUISTICS, CULTURE, & ASSIMILATION. when i see them walking around in the halls, i usually see a flash of (brooks brothers cuff links, bleu de chanel cologne applied sparingly & kiehl’s hair products). it’s the (cancer)’s birthday on 06/28/1979, and when they were still in school their most requested dish was CAWL from the school’s chefs. hopefully their presence can help ease the minds of gallagher students.
stay tuned for some brief nerd shit:
henry, who goes only by hal or else(!!), was in fact named for prince hal, aka henry v, of shakespeare fame (willy was the one who decided to call him prince hal lol so he’s really more so named after the fictionalization of the prince vs the actual king Also prince hal is like my second fave shakespeare char. ok nerd hour is now over) who was the prince of wales
and hal is welsh! and that’s all i will be saying on that. pls don’t come 4 me matt hitt i’m trying my best
he was born in wales, his family is all welsh, but he grew up primarily in england, which is why his accent is hard to distinguish from an english accent (at least to non-brits, and even then, he doesn’t have a typical welsh accent which already just sounds generally british to most people)
oh yeah don’t fuckin ask me what his label means because i hardly even know. is he, generally speaking, a gentleman? yes. he’s very prim and proper, he loves self-care and grooming products and yes he smells fantastic all the time. his manners are on point but this was not show-cased by his first starter lmao
he’s bond-esque only in the fact that he’s british, he’s part of mi6 & he always wears suits. lucifer gave this to me and who am i to reject gifts from the devil
also...lowkey...will probably commandeer the bartending class from time to time but u didn’t hear that from me!
anyways, the obvious: hal went to blackthorne. and he graduated, so...yeah i guess he killed somebody in order to do that but! what about it! i would say that it’s a good thing that hal went to a prep school because that meant that someone who “wronged” him in the past was an agent for a foreign agency that wasn’t exactly on the up and up who tried to kill him when he was only twelve because he was a legacy sooo! like...maybe we’re okay with it u kno ahksjdf
also he survived a hit when he was twelve omg 😎
he’s pretty cocky and i would say it’s to a fault but honestly it’s not because it doesn’t bite him in the ass very often but hey that could change who am i to say. or know anything about my own characters

Honestly, her just trying to apologize for something that could’ve been a secret was just foolish and made her look like a clown. But she felt bad for even saying it out loud to Bobby, which meant that it was out in the universe instead of just kept inside of her head. Which caused her to stand in front of Hal, cookies from the dining hall stuffed into a plastic baggie in her hand, a wary smile on her face. “Take these as a ‘we-did-it!’ gift,” Naomi began. “And I’m sorry for suspecting you to be the mole alongside Jack.” @hal-hardy
Initially, he eyed the bag in her hand with curiosity, not a clue who they were supposed to be for. And then, briefly, with mild disdain, because surely she could have scrounged up a decent container. As she spoke, his expression shifted from confused to offended to amused. “Me? Working alongside...Stone? And I’d rather break both of my legs than ever do the Brotherhood’s bidding.” What exactly had he done to earn her suspicions? Was he somehow too vocal about his hatred for the organization? Hesitantly, he reached out to take the cookies. “Is this how you always apologize to colleagues?”
“What’s the point in subtlety when my job is basically go big or go home?” he asks with a lazy smile and motions for Hal to join him. He’s known Hal for a long enough time to not feel any sort of ill-will at any of his quips. And long enough to flirt mercilessly with the knowledge that at this point there really was no getting rid of him. “And the reason they keep me locked away is because I’m just too pretty. I’ll distract you field agents with my smarts and my looks.”
"With you, it’s go big or go big, isn’t it?” He’s never known Roman to call it quits on anything, which he can admire, though it’s more so him admiring a trait they both share. Hal pulls on his suit jacket as if to straighten it before gingerly taking a seat. No need to look anything less than his best under any circumstances. “I don’t think that’s quite the come on you think it is,” he says with a half-amused smile. “To imply I’m not distracting? Sloppy work.”
well, that makes her feel good. she’s always approached it that everybody’s got family issues to some degree– and maybe that’s a good reason to not be a dick. but the thought of people actively choosing this life when they can have a perfectly normal one otherwise? it leaves a sour taste in her mouth. “really?” she asks, and she wonders what would happen if she did the same. she’s always dreamed about getting away, but not having the financial support makes it near impossible. “we used to train together. when we were little,” she begins, craning her neck so she’s looking up at it. “and when we got older and showed promise in specific skills, they sort of began focusing more on that.” in truth, she is rubbish at fighting. but she’s by no means out of shape, she works out a couple of times a week, a habit now ingrained in her. “though, you are correct in saying that i’m not great at it.” she shifts her weight from one foot to the next, and then at his comment, her brow furrows. she knows they aren’t close– otherwise, ellie would have been aware of hal’s entire existence, but still, it’s odd to think that neither tried to contact each other. was claudia that cold? was hal? “i’m pretty sure she can,” she says, with a shrug. “i don’t know her that well, but her and enzo are practically fused at the hip. one of her majors is threat elimination– so i’d assume so.”
"i think my parents and i both preferred it that way. i went to blackthorne as they wanted and otherwise they didn’t care what i did.” he’s not sure how true that is, but he happened to be someone who wanted the same things for himself that his parents did so there was never much resistance. he scoffs, “sure, why be well-rounded when you can focus all of your attentions on one thing? agencies love that.” hal gets the distinct feeling that ellie doesn’t much care for her gallagher studies, so he’s likely not insulting her by implying her career prospects are weak. “you should ask naomi for pointers. if you have to resort to asking miles for tips, don’t bother.” it’s probably frowned upon to speak poorly of other mentors, but he’s not a real professor so he doesn’t care. “excellent!” and he barely refrains from a comment about how enzo’s girlfriend is his better half. “i hope she has the forethought to toughen him up. it’ll be better in the long run, though training with a loved one can be fruitless if they’re not willing to be brutal.”

Roman rubbed at his eyes underneath scratched up glasses. He knew they needed repairing, but it always slipped his mind at the right time. When he opened his eyes, he noticed Hal across the way in the courtyard, and perhaps out of the need to be kept company, started signaling at him until he paid attention. “Psst! Hal!”
As the semester neared an end, Hal tried to feel some sense of finality, like a bizarre chapter of his life was closing, but mostly he was tired of students and ready to return to MI6. Seeing old classmates was a mixed bag of annoyance, dread and faint excitement, but he didn’t mind even the unsavory Blackthorne boys because he knew this was only temporary. When he finally looked up and saw Roman, it was a relief more than anything else. “Now, this is why they keep you locked away in a room somewhere, Gray. Never quite learned the art of subtlety, did you?”
“i don’t think ALL of them aren’t well behaved,” a nose scrunch in almost frustration. do all of the adults think that the kids aren’t trustworthy? it’s not like, they’re gonna go out and kill someone —- or hopefully not. “dunno. i’m just surprised that they let us out to begin with, you know? after everything. including the transfers.” that aren’t so much transfers as they are literally anything else, but that’s the best word to describe them in public.
"obviously, enzo, speaking in generalizations doesn’t mean it applies to every single individual.” if his nephew is a not all ____ person he’s going to go back to pretending they’re not related. “to hazard a guess, i would say that’s why you have been permitted to leave campus. and i’m not sure you’re all any less safe here.” at least in roseville, there are more witnesses. they’re always in public while in the small town.

“i mean, in the grand scheme of things, whose family here really is?” she retorts, but she knows what he means. the cavanaghs certainly have a specific way of child rearing, and a lot of it is the effect of living a life of espionage. she shrugs. “most of them are moved out,” she says, simply. her and enzo being the two youngest. “and our parents preferred we focused on our studies.” true enough, there’s a reason enzo went one way and ellie another. there’s significantly less camaraderie among the cavanagh kids than there used to be. it’s all very formal and awkward and frankly ellie hates it. “hm. i wonder why she’s never mentioned you,” she says, though, it’s mostly her thinking aloud. “yeah, i’m sure he’s just… thinking about other things,” she says, with a nod. “he has a girlfriend and all of that. they spend most of their time together.”
"more of them are than you’d think.” especially in comparison to when he was in university. far as he can tell, many people come from a non prep school background nowadays. “well, yes, i’d moved out of my parents’ house by the time i was your age.” they weren’t awful but hal had craved independence for his whole life and he took that opportunity nearly the moment he turned eighteen. “believe it or not, some aspects of this profession are actually better studied alongside someone else. i’m not sure how you all grew up sparring individually.” ironically enough, he had trained with claudia quite a bit before she left for school herself. “unless you’re rubbish at it, which...wouldn’t be surprising. no offense.” but she was tiny and enzo looked flimsy and knowing their specializations, it seemed they lacked all physical prowess. of course, hal preferred linguistics, culture and assimilation himself, but he was in shape and well-trained and it showed when he was pressed to fight. “i don’t,” he said simply, because whether ellie liked her mother or not, it was probably in poor taste to say the woman pushed away the rest of her family for kirk. “please tell me she knows how to fight, at least.”
it’s been a whole ( correction: a long while ) since he’s seen, or even spoken to hal. and considering everything going on? it’s not like enzo has taken the time to seek him out and sit down, talk about everything. but when the kid sees him out during the roseville trip - it doesn’t hurt to make a little small talk, right? “i thought the locals didn’t exactly like it when the students came to town — that true?”
he turns his attention to enzo with slight surprise, mainly because it’s been made clear that his assumption about lack of communication between the cavanagh children was correct. so he doubts his nephew is seeking him out for anything family related, though he wouldn’t be disappointed either way. “i’m sure it is. i haven’t spent a lot of time in roseville myself but gallagher students aren’t as well behaved as they claim to be, especially when allowed off campus so rarely. not to worry, though, these businesses still want your money just like anyone else’s.”

“that’s usually the normal way to put it,” she replies, though, it’s not like she cares either way. she barely knows who he is, and while this is a revelation, it’s almost not surprising to find a family member here. given the amount of children in her own family, she feels like she can turn a corner and bump into another member of her lineage. “not to her face,” she says, because truthfully, her mom terrifies her. not as much as her dad, never as much as kirk, but claudia cavanagh is not exactly the kindest woman either. she shakes her head. “i barely see my own siblings,” she admits. while close at one time, the cavanagh children are not anymore– thanks to years of separation and ingrained sibling rivalry. siblings being pit against siblings and so forth. “do you have other siblings?” she asks, wondering how big her family actually is. “does– enzo know about you?”
"your family isn’t exactly normal.” himself included. if nothing else, they’re spies, which doesn’t fit the typical nuclear family dynamic. he hadn’t thought she’d be so formal to her parents, because much as kirk was a hard ass, hal doubted he or claudia would insist their children be so stiff with them. “did you not spend the summers together? did you all have your own rooms? or you just focused your energy on avoiding one another?” considering his own relationship with his sister, this is hardly a reveal. she wouldn’t be much good at teaching sibling closeness. “no, i’m afraid. just the one sister dodging my calls.” a joke, or a lie. he doesn’t call. “doubtful. i all but spelled it out for him during the lockdown but...not very perceptive for a spy-to-be.”
miles knew fully well that the supposed niceties were an act. and had it been most anyone else, he would have ( sarcastically ) played along. but something about having his past suddenly spring back up to haunt him hasn’t exactly put him in the mood for games. he rolls his eyes at the less than subtle jab, and even though he knows he shouldn’t add fuel to the fire he can’t resist defending himself. he knows how to get there from his room. it’s just from everywhere else that’s a problem. “i just need to see it once and i’ll have it,” he mumbles. “i’m not entirely incompetent.” obviously, if he’s here despite some of his old connections. and as much as he’d love to know, he certainly isn’t about to ask hal for help figuring it out. “yeah, alright.” he hummed noncommittally. not really buying it, but not wanting to argue either. “lead the way.”
though he doesn’t long for the old days at all, hal had enjoyed his time at blackthorne...relatively. it was a dank, disgusting place to live for four years, but the lessons were invaluable and he’d made lifelong friends. miles, naturally, not being one. “haven’t been to the gym yet, hm? well...” he looks the other man up and down and though it’s of course impossible to tell the shape he’s in, he makes a vaguely judgmental expression all the same.”i gleaned that.” hal has taken to utilizing the gym for his own purposes in the early hours, when most students would rather be asleep than working on their personal fitness. “it’s too easy,” he mutters to himself, taking the high road and not pointing out to miles that he’s wrong in his own estimation of his competency. without another word, he turns and starts leading the way as promised. “what’ve you been up to, then?” he asks, leaving to vague, as if it could be about his time at gallagher or his life post grad.
– “WELL, MAYBE THEY SHOULDN’T BE,” IRENE NOTES, because gallagher when she was here was about discipline, about getting the job done. things feel…much more lax these days. “ but many of the students were upset about things that were hidden from them about their classmates and mentors. whether it’s justified, i don’t know, but – that’s what the note seemed to suggest, ” she suggests, and honestly, it’s nothing irene didn’t KNOW about jack and miles already, but she can see why it would upset students. “ have you…had much experience with the brotherhood ? ” she asks, looking at hal. honestly, she doesn’t know much about his career at all, but she’s certainly curious. “ the job description seems to be to STOP them, which…has clearly taken us some time, ” she smiles wryly, looking at the mess in front of them. “ so, you just want to blow this off ? ” perhaps she’s not TOTALLY opposed to the notion.
"no, of course, everyone should be as dreadfully boring and duty-bound as we are. they’ll find their way, or they...won’t make it.” and though blackthorne and gallagher had quite the reputation, attendance doesn’t ensure graduation, and graduation doesn’t ensure success. “if they really believe they know the first thing about any of us, they’re deluding themselves. we’re working spies, who’s to say all of us aren’t using covers right now just as insurance? for both us and them? i’d argue we’ve been too candid.” for once, he’s not just playing devil’s advocate. it’s baffling how much transparency people in the world of espionage expect. “not much. i’ve known members and naturally they tried to recruit me during my school days, but i can’t think of anything more pathetic. blaming others because your life hasn’t been what you’d hope, it’s imbecilic. our destinies are our own when it comes down to it.” hal is glad for the change in topic, shown in his immediate grin. “i’d love to never touch a piece of garbage again in my life.”
“ hal, ” elise lifted her head at the voice of the other, leaning back on her chair, returning the politeness. brown hues settled on his figure, before continuing. “ my student ? ” that piqued her interest. “ if you’re going to tell me they’re little shits, i won’t deny it. ” she trained them after all. “ that wasn’t what you came here for, isn’t it ? how can i be of assistance then ? ”
“if that so shocking?” he said, his tone full of false offense. “i don’t know them personally...although i won’t deny i believe that’s a safe bet.” hal actually liked his students, more than he anticipated, mostly because he spent very little time with children or people still going through the education process. “i’m being genuine -- i was only curious if any of them stood out to you. not that i’d try to poach them for mi6, but it’s good to be aware of who i should keep an eye out for once they enter the field.”
– “RIGHT. WELL, SOME OF US AREN’T HERE TO HAVE FUN,” IRENE REPLIES, rather adamantly. she’s a bit frustrated at how slow all of this has moved, that childish pranks have taken priority over the culprit. “ i think it’d get you stabbed by some of these women, ” she says, “ but i don’t think they seem intelligent. ” irene pauses, “ i do wonder if the events are connected – the prank was a pretty convenient distraction from an information-filled email sent out a couple days prior. ” she presses her lips together. she doesn’t believe in coincidence, after all. “ well, we’re being paid to solve this mess. so…how well are we doing what we’re being paid for ? ”
"i think plenty of the students are.” and he had been referring to the students, though if he really gave it more thought, it was possible that a fellow mentor had taken the sword, though he couldn’t imagine why. a graduated gallagher girl was the most likely to know how to go about it, that’s for certain. “that would imply that the thief was impacted by the email, which...far as i understand it, not many students were implicated.” hal is not the sort to blame children for the faults of their family, or in this case, older male family members. but with everything else that’s happened this year, he’s not thrilled by the amount of brotherhood adjacent people freely walking the halls -- primarily certain mentors. “are we? i don’t recall that being in the job description. actually, i never read a job description to begin with. this is, more or less, a voluntary position. our real job is out there,” he says with a slight turn, gesturing vaguely towards the nearest window. “i’m not suggesting we stray from our best capabilities, but only so much can be expected of us in unprecedented circumstances.”

she stares at him for a moment, eyes squinting as she studies his features. she guesses she can see the resemblance, but really, it’s not something she’s often looking for. “oh,” is all that comes out of her mouth, at first. not so much of a shock as it is, well, unexpected. but it’s feasible. “so you’re my uncle,” she says, flatly, calling it what it is. her family is full of secrets, she’s sure, considering it’s one that’s rooted in spydom, so of course, there’s going to be people she’s not aware of. she’s barely aware of her other siblings. “so… are you and claudia on bad terms, or?”
"yes, that’s another way of putting it.” not the way he would put it, clearly, because being an uncle came with certain responsibilities he has never performed (through no fault of his own). sure, he and claudia were never incredibly close, but they were certainly siblings until she met kirk. “you call your mother claudia?” hal may be formal, but never towards his mother. still, family closeness isn’t a strong trait in the hardy familiy, either. “i believe if we weren’t, you would have known who i was already. do you...ever see your other aunts and uncles?”
– “MAYBE. ALTHOUGH I’M SURE THERE ARE EASIER WAYS TO GET EXPELLED,” IRENE NOTES. after all, finals are coming up, but hal has a good point. “ honestly, i expected we’d see some boy showing it off on the grounds by now – to impress a girl or something, ” she chuckles, because even though they’re spies-in-training…it’s more than clear that hormones are also rampant. “ i hope so, too. i wouldn’t want anyone else to get hurt because they aren’t being careful, i…it does seem like they forget that there’s a killer on campus, ” she notes, thinking of the students she sees going out alone after hours, walking without friends, wandering into the woods…she knows they can take care of themselves, but there is something to be said about confidence versus stupidity. “ well, would you rather call a janitor ? ” GRANTED, it’s their job to track down the brotherhood and it’s not like they’ve had much success !
"yes, but where’t the fun in that?” as if hal would ever have gotten expelled from blackthorne. not even close. he was a rule follower to the letter. “takes a bit more than some old sword to impress women, doesn’t it?” it’d more likely impress another boy, he thinks. “i’m not sure if that’s an intentional self-preservation technique or stupidity, but either way, i don’t plan on allowing any other students to come to harm.” what they need around campus is better security measures. cameras on every wall with 24 hour monitoring and that sort of thing. “is this...a trick question?” he asks, looking down at his suit, slightly waving his rather expensive monogramed handkerchief. “it’s what they’re paid for, is it not?”
