Stairway to the Stars

Summary: In 1957, Athena Grant, ready to move on from the heartbreak and embarrassment from her divorce, is newly hired as a telephone operator for Firehouse 118. There, she works with an eclectic group of firefighters and operators including the kind, but closed off Captain Nash.

A story told in three drabbles.

Margo — 1980 Winter Olympics

With her bronze medal tucked away, she quickly makes her way through the streets of Lake Placid, careful to avoid both cameras and teammates. The door, just as he promised in his note, is cracked open. The path through the nearly deserted building housing the Brazilian team is uneventful, her eyes rolling when she sees the red sock on the door.

A hand wraps around her wrist and pulls her into the room when she knocks the secret code. “You were brilliant.” Sergei Nikulov, the gold medalist figure skater from Russia, passionately kisses her. “But not as good as me.”

Sergei — 1980 Winter Olympics

His fingers trace down her spine as they lay in bed, their skin still sticky with sweat and glory. She had made him pay for his cheeky comment when he pulled her into the room. In the end, she had given him the reward of allowing him to whisper her name. He is in love with her and he knows that she feels the same.

Their predicament, however, is precarious.

Russians and Americans have a rivalry that can easily reach nuclear levels. We are proof that love conquers all. “Marry me.”

Her smile ignites a fierce fire in his chest.

The World — 2002 Winter Olympics

“Up next is Elaina Nikulov.”

Elaina blows kisses into the crowd as she skates into her starting position. Just as the music starts, a melody of Tchaikovsky’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’, she begins her journey towards gold.

“This is Elaina’s first trip to the Olympics,” the announcer whispers. “Her parents, Margo Madison and Sergei Nikulov, are Olympic medalists figure skaters who dominated the eighties Olympic rink. Once bitter rivals, they shocked the world when they married.”

The crowd cheers when she perfectly lands her triple axel.

“Elaina is dedicating this performance to her parents who just celebrated their twenty-second wedding anniversary.”
