Sorry I am seemingly in a minority but I did like Mikoto's third trial.

People seem to not remember this is a thought experiment and designed to make you think, if we operated on 'did this person kill someone' then most of the cast by default is guilty, Fuuta, Kotoko, Haruka, Mu, Shidou, and Amane killed people, ok why are they innocent then? Why did you vote them innocent if you're going to look objectively at Mikoto/John A lot of people are looking at this from a western perspective and not an eastern one, DID doesn't require childhood trauma for a diagnosis over there. With that knowledge, yes it makes sense the writers didn't include childhood trauma there. Yes it makes sense that they wrote it as he just woke up one day and John was there. Its not the same type of world as it is in (lets face it) America. People wonder why Yuno was in Milgram well its because Abortion as a concept isn't widely talked about as it is in America. And with the audience being more and more western a lot of the nuance in this fact is lost. Also I just thought it was a nice song and pretty visuals don't piss me off.

I think people in general know that there are both social and linguistic differences in how things like DID are talked about in Japan vs English speaking countries, but it doesn’t really change the fact that portrayals like this are harmful to people in both audiences. Even if it’s “expected”.

And it’s not like Japan is some place that has completely unknown cultural differences from “western” countries. And I’m assuming you mean white American by that, correct me if I’m wrong. There are people in Japan with similar disorders that would still find this just as harmful as anyone else in the world with DID/similar.

Not trying to be overly critical. (Always have to say that because I never know with this fandom). It’s valid to like it, but it’s more than understandable that people are pissed off. And it’s not like the JP fandom is monolithic in feeling one way or the other.

Idk maybe it’s the term “eastern” that’s irking me here and making me have to respond. Like, the CN or KR audiences would not have the same perspectives as the JP one😭

I know the poster isn't meaning to be insensitive, but "eastern perspective" is kind of a strange thing to say when referring to Japan and only Japan is definitely a choice. And yes, while talking about mental health is far more stigmatized in Japan than it is in the bicoastal US, it's not like people there (especially someone like the author who claims to have a psych degree) have zero access to information about it.

Also for the abortion thing -- in Japan specifically, abortion has more protections than some places in the US.

But yes, I am also irked by the "eastern" term. There is no "eastern perspective". There's the cultural attitudes in Japan, sure. But some of us from so-called "eastern" countries (different parts of Asia) don't share cultural perspectives with Japan or even East Asia in general.

I've been seeing a lot of discussion online about Mikoto's recent MV and his crime report. So I wanted to share my two cents as someone who has a similar (but not the same) disorder to Mikoto. I'm also a bit older than him, so I may be able to give a little different take from any younger people commenting on this!

I personally had a lot of hope for Mikoto. The fact that he was a murderer in the first place was always a red flag, but once we got to the second trial, I was more focused on the portrayal of John. I really loved that they humanized him instead of treating him as some "crazy" monster. They let him speak, they gave him his own distinctive personality, and they allowed people to sympathize with him. I know that's the bare minimum, but it was so different from what I usually saw.

But then trial 3 came around. I felt like they really sidelined John and went back to the trial 1 status quo. I also hated that the report implied that Mikoto formed DID as an adult, which... Is just not accurate. It would be one thing if they gave any implication that Mikoto had DID before and split a new alter from the stress, but there's nothing in the text that implies that.

I also have mixed feelings about the report saying Mikoto had an average childhood. Yes, people with DID or similar disorders can have an average or happy childhood outside of whatever trauma they experienced. But the report seemed to go out of its way to imply that Mikoto was "normal" (heavy quotes) before he "snapped" and split John.

At the end of the day, my main issue with Mikoto is that DID was given to yet another murderer character. The lack of knowledge of the disorder by the author is secondary to me. Are there aspects of Mikoto that I like? Yes. But just because there was some progress made doesn't mean this is enough. It's unfair to expect people to settle for yet another murderer character because this time he's slightly more humanized than other characters with DID.
