“Gwayne represents what Alicent used to be”
(loose quote from Hill’s Alive new youtube video essay on Criston)
Gwayne is the beacon that Criston wanted to follow, Gwayne is the knight Criston wanted to be, Gwayne loved Criston as Alicent never did, or at least Gwayne never felt shame for it. But Criston never saw him.
Criston is a moth, who just wanted to share Alicent’s light. He is an insect under dragon’s feet, and he is trying to get out of the night, because there are no others like Alicent, except there are - and it is Gwayne, but he is too late, and Criston died and it all was right and it all was wrong.

gwaynston is growing on me
what if you were declared king by your crazy abusive evil uncle and while you were grappling with the moral question of thousands dying in your name you had to tactfully comfort your other uncle who you can only assume was having gay sex with the late lord commander of the kingsguard based on your evil uncle’s homophobic insinuations and your gay uncle’s clear genuine devastation that has him monologuing to you, age sixteen, about how death comes for everyone no matter what. happened to my good friend daeron the daring
gwayne in his room when daeron's not watching:

this is the face of a man who wanted nothing to do with criston cole? who wanted him to die? who hated him and wanted him as far as possible?
at this point, to me, gwayne's implied homosexuality has served one specific purpose: to confirm that he indeed, fell in love with criston. it has no narrative relevance outside this and he has no other love interests. they could've had the exact same character without the purposely added layer of homosexuality if his feelings for criston were strictly platonic and more camaraderie-like.
this episode gave us a grieving gwayne whose reaction still displayed what he felt for criston despite the fact that he knew this man was dead from the moment he was forced to leave him behind. to be the first character being delivered the news of his death, to have his nephew expressing his condolences to him - it's not a coincidence to me and these were the kind of details that led me to predict their dynamic altogether.
ser criston cole, what an awfully tragic character. spent his life seeking love and validation from all these nobles and died being loved by one he could never have loved back.
Gay knights yearning for each other🙂↕️✨️
I also have a fic that goes with this piece - A Dream Of Oldtown, where there is even more yearning happening<3

gwaynston but it's a reciprocated love story where the idealization of alicent that resides within criston is slowly torn apart throughout the war and the experience of meeting gwayne. perhaps alicent is not his salvation but a glorified jailer, and perhaps her insufferable brat of a brother has been the only nobleman in his life that feels real and tangible. and gwayne is afraid, so afraid - that this beautiful man with such way with words only wants him for whatever resemblance he shares with his sister, but he's wrong. he is wanted, he is desired and loved because he is nothing like her.

Gays
Wet cat x mentally ill dog
I know Criston doesn't really look like Criston yet, but we're getting there trust. And I just couldn't resist exaggerating Gwayne's hair a bit, both in length and colour...I just enjoy drawing hair way too much...

criston cole has been relentlessly punished by this fandom because he “dragged” poor little gwayne to war and “made him miserable” (when he, in fact, did not want to march with gwayne - it was alicent's order) and the few people who were on board with the idea of them together or gwayne developing feelings for him were persistently mocked and ridiculed for it.
now, we have ormund hightower - a man whose first interaction with gwayne consisted of homophobic microaggressions and one of the nastiest things a character has ever said to another in this show (and by this i mean when he alluded to daeron having to watch his backside with gwayne around). so far, he's been treated as “the wife” “the husband” “the alpha to his omega” despite how uncomfortable and clearly abusive his relationship with gwayne's beloved nephew is. all meanwhile the meanest thing criston cole ever said to gwayne was “no fucking inns.”
i must ask with full sincerity now, what is it about incest that turns y'all on so fucking badly? how is it even possible to consume fiction like this?
those dom daddy gwayne x poor little targ princess self insert fics aging like milk right now LMAOOOOO
