Dinah Washington, Los Angeles, 1959. Singer and pianist Dinah Washington was a trailblazer who embraced multi-colored wigs and extravagant furs to match her flamboyant jazz style. She announces that if Doris Day and Elvis Presley are going to make money singing the blues then she has a right to adopt their white personae in her performances. Washington's crossover success inspires later artists - such as Etta James, Tina Turner, Patti LaBelle, Mary J. Blige, etc. - to do the same.
