This week we present a performance that reflects on climate change and the often unheard processes happening behind it. “I can hear the ice go” is a performance conceived by Peter Venus, a sonic ritual for amplified melting ice cube and an acoustic instrument. We perform this piece as part of the DACA 2021 conference at MUMUTH Graz.

Even though our IKO project has already passed, we still get questions and comments from interested people. For those who want to know more, see here: https://iem.kug.ac.at/projects/osil/about-the-iko.html
The IKO is a fascinating device, and if it wasn’t so damn expensive, we would recommend it as the perfect monitor speaker for any musician ;) (though you have to admit that with its size and weight, touring with it may not be really easy...)
Jorge Diego Vazquez Salvagno, latajkiaswole for double bass with two bows and live electronics
This is one of the most special pieces we have been working on over the past years. The idea of playing a string instrument with two bows has been used already in earlier works by Julio Estrada, for example, but here it is taken to a whole new level of sound, action and expression.
The idea of the piece is to recreate the soundworld of a native people from the Andes region with the means of the double bass and transform it into a piece that creates a poetic space, uniting traditional sounds with the aesthetics of contemporary music. Like the nomad people, the sounds travel in space, creating a choreography together with the gestures of both bows.
This is another recent piece for electronics and bass, written by Greek composer Artemi Maria Gioti in collaboration with Margarethe Maierhofer-Lischka. The interesting thing about the electronics is that they implement a neural network (aka “deep learning” / “artificial intelligence”) interacting with the performer’s input in realtime. This creates a sort of game-stiuation where the player has to interact with the system until the process becomes unresponsive. Artemi is currently conducting a FWF-funded research project on the same tpoic as part of her PhD at the iem Graz, where we continue to collaborate.

This is a live recording of one piece that is in our repertoire since a long time, and was written for and with Margarethe Maierhofer-Lischka. The composer is Takuto Fukuda, from Japan, who studied in Holland and Austria and now currently is doing his PhD at McGill in Canada. The piece has already been performed several times by different people, accounting for its clear and well-done writing for the instrument and its fluid dramaturgy. This is one piece that we would well recommend to be included into the repertoire canon for bass & electronics.
The performance was recorded at ars electronica festival 2016, electronics are played by the composer himself.
Finally we got the results of our Call for Scores and start working. We will present you pieces by Orestis Toufektsis, Demir Rudel Rey plus some more exciting pieces for tape solo and sax plus electronics. Concerts will take place on April 1. and 3. in Vienna and Graz.
We are excited to participate in a project by ÖGZM (Austrian Society for Contemporary Music). They present a call for Scores for forks for electronics, double bass and saxophone (in free combination). We will perform the results in April in Vienna and Graz and hope for exciting new pieces!
excerpt from an installative live-performance with prepared double bass and multichannel sound distribution, played and recorded in September 2018 @ QO2 Bruxelles.
We started to compile a playlist of pieces for bass & electronics that Maggie played over the past years - some of the newer g’n’f repertoire will be added soon!

We are very happy to play a spontaneous studio concert at the Q-O2 artspace in Brussels on Wed 5. September! Alongside the presentation of artist-in-residence Signe Boe from Denmark we will create an installative live-set for electronics&bass.
we are very happy to announce a new project we will be presenting this year in October. We got the chance to explore the IKO loudspeaker, a very specific spatial audio device which enlarges our duo into a “trio” situation. At the musikprotokoll in Graz we will present works specifically tailored to the IKO by Lorenzo Troiani, Stepha Schweiger, Reinhold Schinwald and Orestis Toufektsis. This project involves quite a lot of hands-on research, we are excited to go for it!
In 2018-2019, we again have the pleasure to premiere some new works by young composers. They are Daniela Fantechi (Florence, Italy), Ansgar Beste (Oslo, Norway) and Reinhold Schinwald (Vienna). Daniela just started her PhD at the Orpheus Institute Ghent about the use of piezoelectric elements as microphones/soundsources, and we will explore some aspects of this together. Ansgar’s work is focusing on the preparation of classical instruments. Reinhold Schinwald is creating a new version of “membra disiecta”, a piece that has been part of a music theatre and is based on a text by Gina Mattiello.
