"Inside" (2025) - freestyle embroidery

Tissue Series

These pieces are made of Japanese mulberry paper and the gilded edges of old books. They are constructed by a technique of rolling and shaping narrow strips of paper called quilling or paper filigree. Quilling was first practiced by Renaissance nuns and monks who are said to have made artistic use of the gilded edges of worn out bibles, and later by 18th century ladies who made artistic use of lots of free time.

The first is a vertical cut of a human head.

Second is a horizontal cut of a human head, focusing on showing the brain.

Third is also a horizontal cut of a human head, this time from below the brain, showing things like the inside of the mouth and sinuses.

Fourth is a vertical cut of a human’s head and upper torso. The organs are easy to pick out.

Fifth is a horizontal cut of the human torso taken from around the shoulders.

Sixth is also a horizontal cut of the human torso and arms, taken from the chest area, with lungs being noticeable.

Seventh is a vertical cut of the full human torso from the front, organs and bones easily visible. It is displayed inside a case with two doors to it open.

Eighth is a vertical cut of the human head and body from the side, and the focus is the spine.

Ninth is a close up of a horizontal cut of the human torso taken aroumd the belly.
