Qui-gon is a cop/detective. Obi-wan is his adopted son (found him as a baby).

Anakin is the son of Shmi, qui-gon’s friend (he helped her during a case before). She died on accident recently, leaving anakin alone, so he got adopted too.

I'll die on the hill that obi-wan doesn't hate qui-gon for taking anakin as padawan (or feel replaced), but sometimes I do like the angst potential.
