So the AU goes something like this

Borrowers have been living in secret for centuries now. I’d say "secret" because Merlin, who is really really old, he's around 10,000 years old, he knows that borrowers exist and knows that for safety reasons they have been hiding in the same way that the fairies have been, which is in some sort of dome/barrier made with magic that prevents other species or animals from entering the borrowers' territory, and they live hidden that way.

All the higher-ups (it’s a monarchy, so the king and some important people) know that Merlin is a patron, which means that he’s like a very, very important person—A patron in my lore is like a vital magic user that is the physical representation of a magical element—essentially, he's really powerful. In the past, he offered himself to help when the borrowers needed it in extreme cases, so the higher-ups know that Merlin knows that they are alive and that they exist. And they also know that if they have any trouble that they cannot fix, they can call him.

The borrowers have a magic crystal that has been holding this dome of safety. However, it has started to crack and lose its magic. So now a group of three inexperienced but well-intentioned borrowers have to go on a mission and look for another crystal.

Here comes the important part. These three borrowers—and all the other borrowers, besides the higher-ups, for that matter—don’t know that other species know about their existence. Supposedly, only Merlin knows, and that would be like the ideal scenario, but no. Rumours spread, and somehow, because that’s how the world works, the word is out that borrowers exist, and in the black market of this world, they could be quite valuable because it’s not like common to see, it’s actually really fucking hard because <<most>> don’t come out of their safety dome. Whatever, the point is that borrowers firmly believe, and have been for centuries, that nobody else knows of their existence and that they absolutely cannot come in contact with "giants" or "monsters".

Because the higher-ups don’t want to lose the trust that their people have in them, they go and contact Merlin and ask him if there is a way that he can help this group get the crystal and back safely without revealing that other creatures know about the existence of the borrowers. And also the higher-ups know that even if they revealed that other species know about them, the borrowers wouldn’t be willing to work with the creatures that they have been told for hundreds of years are evil monsters that are out to get them, eat them and kill them. So they ask Merlin if there is something he could do, and luckily enough, there was.

He gets the other two patrons that were available, which would be Koa, the fire patron, and Asher, the nature patron. Merlin gets these two guys, and he quickly briefs them on the situation, the gravity of it and that they need to protect these 3 borrowers in their mission to get the crystal. For that, Merlin has figured out the way to use his magic to shrink them both so that way the borrowers will trust them and they would just think that they were fellow borrowers who decided to leave the dome because yes, those exist.

The higher-ups are notified about the plan that Merlin has. They agree, and Asher and Koa go to where the borrowers live. They introduce themselves to them as outside borrowers and then tell them that they were called by the higher-ups to help these three borrowers in their adventure to retrieve the crystal.

I'm avoiding doing my homework so I thought instead of doomscrolling I'd share a g/t AU I made a while ago so I at least get my writing juices flowing

In this AU, Hunter and Asher are both princes who had a curse cast upon them that would take effect once they turned 21. Hunter has yet to be affected by the curse since he's 18, Asher on the other hand...

Despite them being cursed, they still have royal responsibilities to attend to. This day, Asher had an important lunch meeting with the princess of another kingdom, so their parents could discuss the possibility of uniting the families through them. The meeting was supposed to only last a couple of hours, and the foreign royal family absolutely had to leave before sundown. However, a huge storm hit the kingdom, and the other royal family couldn't leave safely, so against their will, the royal family offered them to stay in the castle overnight.

The princess, Tulip, was eager to hear the news, as it meant she could spend more time getting to know the prince she most likely would have to marry—during their time today, she'd grown quite fond of the prince so marrying him didn't seem so bad—However, Asher was nowhere in sight. When she asked around for him, she was told he couldn't meet her at the moment. Disappointed, she just went to her bedroom to rest.

Hours passed, unable to sleep, Tulip decided to go get some water from the kitchen. As she was roaming the quiet halls, a strange noise broke the silence, a deep humming sound vibrated through the corridors, just loud enough to feel it, but not to figure out what it was. Curiosity got the best of her, she began following that weird vibration until she was standing in front of an old wooden door that seemed to be hidden in plain sight.

Slowly, she opened the door just to be met with what seemed to be an infinite set of stairs. She walked down the stairs, her anticipation growing with each step as the humming sound slowly became louder and louder. As soon as she reached the last step, she froze in the spot, her eyes unwilling to believe what was in front of her.

A figure, taller than the tallest of trees, was sitting there, quietly—as he could—humming a song. The prince who had just spent the afternoon with her suddenly filling up a space bigger than a ballroom. She didn't even have time to collect her thoughts before the prince spotted her

"Tulip!?? What are you doing?! You're not supposed to be here!" Asher whispered in a panic while trying to cover his face with his hands.

"Asher is that you?? What happened, why are you like this" Only concern came out of her words, but Asher couldn't help but feel a little sting from them.

"I will explain everything in the morning I swear, but you seriously need to leave right now"

"What, why? I want an explanation now."

"look im not allowed to be with other people while I'm like this, much less a princess from another kingdom, I don't want to get in trouble. Please, I promise we'll talk in the morning" Tulip rarely let her curiosity rest, but she couldn't go against the pleading sound of his voice.

"Fine. First thing in the morning"
