Time is something many people take for granted.Ā Iām surprised when I see people wasting their time, doing nothing or doing things that have no real value.Ā No real value meaning not being productive.Ā And Iām not pointing fingers.Ā I find myself many times doing stupid things that I know I shouldnāt be spending my time on.Ā But instead of playing video games and watching Netflix, shouldnāt we be spending more time on things that helpĀ āimproveā us or make us better?Ā I mean, if time is so valuable, shouldnāt we being doing things that equate to thatĀ āhighā value?Ā Why donāt we take it seriously and why donāt we respect it?Ā Once time is gone, itās gone forever, we can never get it back.
Throughout the day, I will catch myself not making good use of my time.Ā Sometimes IāllĀ justify by making excuses like,Ā āI need to learn about thisā orĀ āThis is importantā orĀ āI just need a little break.āĀ But in reality, is what Iām doing really that important?Ā Probably not.
Victor Hugo, the famous French novelist and poet (writer of Les MisĆ©rables and the Hunchback of Notre-Dame) once said, āShort as life is, we make it still shorter by the careless waste of time.ā
The Bible also speaks toward this.
Ephesians 5:11 (MSG) says,Ā āDonāt waste your time on useless work, mere busywork, the barren pursuits of darkness. Expose these things for the sham they are. Itās a scandal when people waste their lives on things they must do in the darkness where no one will see. Rip the cover off those frauds and see how attractive they look in the light of Christ.ā
Colossians 4:5 (ESV) says, āWalk in wisdom toward outsiders, making the best use of the time.ā
A verse I really like because how direct it is, is fromĀ Proverbs 6:9-11 which says, āHow long will you lie there, you lazy person? When will you get up from sleeping? You sleep a little; you take a nap. You fold your hands and lie down to rest. So you will be as poor as if you had been robbed; you will have as little as if you had been held up.ā
How can we stop wasting time?
I think one way is by examining and recognizing how much time we actually have every day to do the things we need to do.Ā For example, in my 24 hour day, I sleep about 6 hours, I spend about 2 hours for eating, and 1.5 hours for traveling.Ā That leaves me 15.5 hours to do what I need to do, like working, exercising, etc.Ā It seems like a lot of time, but it really isnāt.Ā Some of that time is used to the unexpected things, like visits from friends or sudden problems.
So we really need to respect time: the time given to us, the time we give to others, and the time others give to us.
Respecting other peopleās time is truly IMPORTANT.Ā If you have an appointment to meet someone, get there on time.Ā Youāve experienced those times when the people you are supposed to meet are late or behind schedule.Ā Doesnāt that annoy the crap out of you?Ā Iām sure you didnāt like it.Ā And Iām sure if you were the culprit, the other party didnāt like it.Ā Ā Being late all the time is a poor reflection on you and shows that you donāt respect the other person and you donāt value their time.Ā They are not important enough to be on time.Ā If you had a meeting with an important person that you admire, you would make certain that you were ready for that meeting.Ā You wouldnāt be on time... you would be there early.Ā So be there on time and be ready to go.
