Thoughts I have on the James Cameron Avatar Sequels
1. One aspect I’m glad they’ll be using is that each of the sequels will be a self contained standalone. You do not have to watch any of the others to be able to enjoy them, per a James Cameron interview I read. After all the series we’ve churned through in the past decade, I have to say I’m really relieved that they’re going this route with these films because sometimes, I don’t want to have cliffhangers. I want to enjoy a film with an ending that ties up all the loose ends in tidy, satisfying bow, while still being able to enjoy a franchise. Huge respect
2. Also, I love that they’re bringing in new cast members to care about and love. There will be Na’vi who communicate through sign language (I’m suspecting this is in part largely connected to the Water Tribe and I’m so excited to see it asdjflkdjgd;laskjdflas; I have relatives who use sign language and I’m so pleased to see the diversity and representation in these upcoming projects. I think sign language should be taught largely because it’s such an important thing but I digress)
3. Speaking of new cast members, the lovely Kate Winslet is going to be in the FILM and I am so excited to see it. Apparently, Cameron said he has been trying to team up with Winslet again for the past twenty years, so it’s super exciting to see that happen. I can’t wait to see how it goes (now if they could just add DiCaprio….lol)
4. The potential sequel titles are, respectively: Avatar: The Way of Water, Avatar: The Seed Bearer, Avatar: The Tulkun Rider, and Avatar: The Quest for Eywa. I feel like those titles all pack an emotional punch. They aren’t final, though, so I guess we’ll have to see if they stick
5. Sigourney Weaver and Stephen Lang returning was kind of a shock. But then again, Pandora is a very healing planet. I can see Weaver’s character becoming sort of like the Ben Kenobi to the characters. I’d love to see it lol and Lang plays a very convincing villain. It was mentioned that he will be the primary antagonist of all the sequels, and that they’re really going to explore his character more deeply in the second one in particular. It makes me think about what was said, how Eywa doesn’t pick sides. I wonder if she resurrected him to teach him kindness and compassion? I’m hoping he will become an eventual ally and fight for the Na’vi. Fingers crossed anyway
6. I am here for more power couple content as well, with Jake Sully and Neytiri. It’s kind of always bothered me when a story starts about a couple, and then shifts to their descendants. However. I am hopeful in this because it will show their protective side, and give us new angles of the characters. I’m going to remain optimistic until I see it because I feel like they’d be really cute, loving parents. Cameron did mention, though, that in Avatar 2 and 3 that Jake will be going through some “dark places” which makes me scared. I know some people don’t care for him but his growth just warms my heart. I feel like his arc is like a journey of faith. You watch him grow from skeptical and unbelieving to adopting the religion and praying to Eywa, which was one of the most powerful moments of the film, to me. Faith is super important to me, and I love seeing it portrayed on film.
7. The latest release date for Avatar 2 is for December 16th, 2022. It’s going to be hard to wait that long, but I also am glad I only recently got involved in the fandom, and saw the movie for the first time, because I don’t have to wait as long as everyone else.
8. I can’t wait until they release the trailer.
