The Robocop reboot was fantastic. I could write an essay on how it's as perfect a movie for 2014 as the original was for 1987, but I'm lazy so I won't. What I will say is that the original was rooted in a lot of the fears we had about corporate America in the late 1980s. Look at any other major work of science fiction from that era and you'll see a lot of corporate-ruled dystopias (Blade Runner and Neuromancer, please raise your hands). Corporations were beginning to infect and colonize the world, and our fiction was a reaction to that. Today, we live in a world almost entirely controlled by the actions of those non-human entities. Charles Stross makes a fantastic analogy between corporate entities and alien invaders (http://www.antipope.org/charlie/blog-static/2010/12/invaders-from-mars.html): our laws, behavior, and environment are being terraformed by corporate entities to create a world more conducive to their existence. In the same way that Alex Murphy is made into the creature that he is by Omnicorp, we are being made into the people that we are by the corporations that surround us. You are reading this on Facebook. Facebook has changed the way you think and interact with other people. The decisions that Facebook the corporation makes influence the decisions that you as a person make. The 24-hour news cycle and Fox News/CNN/MSNBC have changed the tenor of political discourse in America. The reason the Novak Element segments in the movie are funny is because they're not that far from the truth, as any rational observer of Bill O'Reilly can tell you. Read No Logo and tell me that I'm wrong. Read Jennifer Government and tell me that I'm wrong. Go watch Robocop and tell me that I'm wrong. (brb going to walmart to buy tennis balls)
