Andy Goldsworthy, Red Flags at Fort Mason San Francisco, 2026

"Marking the West Coast debut of Goldsworthy’s monumental installation Red Flags (2020), the exhibition features fifty 5 x 8-foot flags, each stained red with earth collected from one of the fifty US states. Originally hung in New York’s Rockefeller Center, the flags’ presentation at Fort Mason coincides with the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence." The flag in the first photo at the top of the stairs is dyed from dirt from all 50 states.

In addition to Oertel's 1852 painting of New Yorkers pulling down the statue of King George III at Bowling Green on July 9th, 1776, the Historical has also collected fragments of the statue, which monarchist scum in Connecticut saved from being melted into bullets for the Revolution.
