1er août 1914 - Début de la Grande Guerre (“1st August 1914 - Beginning of the Great War”). A French infantryman wearing his blue overcoat and red trousers. These striking uniforms gave the French panache and made them readily distinguishable on the battlefield. This was a necessity in earlier periods of warfare but was ill-suited for combat of the early 20th century where camouflage and blending into the terrain was more important.
