Today's model horse is WIA #BE10009, Vincenzo in perlino coloration. WIA is a company from Germany that makes model horses in a somewhat stiffer, more solid material than Schleich or Papo or Safari Ltd. They are roughly the size of a Schleich horse, possibly a little smaller (though the company does make larger porcelain editions), and tend more toward a realistic portrayal. There are a few retailers that carry them, and you can also find them on ebay.
I've wanted a model horse in the bowing position for a long time, so when I found out about Vincenzo, I was delighted. Though produced by WIA, this is a smaller version of a sculpture by Brigitte Eberl, and she does great work (she also has sculpts by Breyer). Despite its size, this model is highly detailed, both in sculpture and in paint work. It has a nice weight to it, and a nice matte feel.
He came with a little plastic stand to help stabilize him, but honestly, he doesn't need it, as he stands (or bows, I suppose) quite steadily.
WIA doesn't have a large catalogue, and their editions seem to come out slowly (I have no idea what their release schedule is) but I'd love to see more from them.
Excited to hear that I’ve got a couple of projects on the longlist for this year’s World Illustration Awards ✨ Many thanks to The Association of Illustrators, Directory of Illustration, & this year’s jury!
