Some notes:

Seirin senpais have already noted their personalities are the complete opposite from each other (I think the pic can explain that for itself)

As someone mentioned somewhere on Tumblr, they are have the kanji for “morning” and “night” in their last names.

For the time being only two new members have joined Seirin

Asahina has heard of the rumors about “The Phantom Sixth Man of the Generation of Miracles” and realizes in a practice match that it’s Kuroko, who teaches him Seirin’s way of fighting.

It seems like we’re supposed to find him to be an asshole right now, both Kuroko and Momoi clearly find him to be one (though, Momoi still cares a lot about him), and the narrative seems to be implying that it’ll eventually be about giving him the wake up call he needs/redeeming his character. So, I can sit back and go YES I LOVE THIS ASSHOLE and mean it in a “holy shit, he’s hilarious, I love this asshole being such an asshole” way, but also in a “I’m pretty sure I have legit feelings because I can trust the series to give his character the depth I’m hoping for” way.

Hhhngnjklhskj oh yes Aomine is introduced as the king of dicks I remember back when I first read the manga I was like “oh here’s the asshole who will be taught a lesson by Kuroko and Kagami and find redemption in loss” you’d think I would be prepared for the storyline but I was not prepared and this asshole ruined me forever.

The way Kuroko reacts to the very mention of Aomine is telling, it’s an intense response for someone as reserved as Kuroko, there’s clearly something significant in their history AND I AM ALL ABOUT COMPLICATED HISTORIES.

I’ll note that the anime has an unfortunate tendency to shortchange Aomine for some bizarre reason though, and I will probably tell you ALL ABOUT IT when you get to the parts the anime butchered. At least he has Suwabe Junichi for a voice actor though. That is the best choice the anime made in regards to Aomine. …I wish they could have animated him better because he’s so much more attractive in the manga. :|

This is how I feel about a lot of sports anime I’ve been watching lately, that I know where this is headed and that it’s going to give me exactly what I expect it to give me and generally I’m pretty right, but the thing that gets me is that I’M STILL NOT PREPARED FOR THE INTENSITY OF MY FEELINGS. I don’t know how I’ll ultimately wind up feeling about Aomine, but I know I’m interested at the very least and that I’m pretty sure I’ll have at least some sort of emotional investment! (I remember seeing a lot of Aomine posts back from a few years ago, so I have a general sense of what he looked like in the manga and I have to admit that, yeah, I think the anime didn’t really capture his hotness that well, which is surprising, because most of the other characters seem pretty hot to me?)

KnB and pretty much all the really big sports series have that magical touch where they take familiar tropes and spin them just right to grab hold of your emotions and max them out. KnB in particular has this amazing cast and the premise itself is actually kind of unique to me? Because a lot of sports series give the rivals a certain amount of attention and development, but KnB uses that as the backbone of the entire series by introducing the GOM first as this near-mythical dream team and sets up each member in a rival school. Kuroko has a connection to each one. His goal in the beginning is to specifically make them recognize his style of basketball. It’s the fractured former team that the story builds from, and eventually reconnects them. The reason the GOM are so popular is because they’re at the heart of the story, they’re not just the rivals Seirin encounters and has to overcome as a matter of course, the series is so much about the GOM character arcs alongside Kuroko’s and Kagami’s.

The anime’s bias against Aomine pains me forever I will never come to terms with it. A large part of the weird character design they gave him is the permanently furrowed brow and like they maxed out his villain role and changed some of his more complex moments to asshole moments or erased meaningful details completely grumble grumble.

The anime also softens Kise – Fujimaki has actually commented on it, that anime!Kise and manga!Kise are different. His personality flaws are more apparent in the manga, he’s a little more callous and arrogant, not quite as goofy and happy-go-lucky. He’s not that nice of a person at heart lol. The anime likes to play up his comic relief which takes away from how judgmental he is, and how much of his flailing and crying is meaningless because he’s truthfully unaffected by most things, he’s not a sensitive bleeding heart and he’s really not as clingy or sentimental as he first appears. For example in the practice match with Seirin, the anime adds more cute and funny BL tones with him while taking away a serious moment or two.

I’M SORRY I’M BEING SO NEGATIVE I HAVE BECOME VERY BITTER ABOUT THE ANIME it does still do a good job and you definitely get the right sense about the characters! And everything except Aomine’s poor face is very pretty and there’s so much sparkling magic sports moves and everyone’s so gay for each other. I just… am really attached to Kise’s asshole side… and Aomine’s role in the story…
