Love when Dot pulls her hair back to show she Means Business
Oda makes some interesting commentary over the course of this flashback. All indications point to Sabo's family being ridiculously wealthy and powerful--they're not pushing Sabo to marry into the royal family because they're an impoverished family with a noble name, for example. Even after Sabo's family succeeds in making Stelly king, the first thing he tries to do at the Reverie is sit on the Empty Throne. They have everything they could ever want, but it's not enough.
Bluejam is the same. He's a successful pirate captain with a loyal crew, but sells himself to the royal house on the promise of being made an aristocrat.
Then there's the king himself, the leader of a prosperous and apparently peaceful nation, who sets an enormous fire in order to clean up the mess he made and hopefully kill a few undesirables along the way, all in order to cozy up to the Celestial Dragons.
Next chapter Sabo will link this "stench" of the Goa Kingdom to his own lack of freedom. One Piece is a series that prizes ambition, but this flashback shows the dark side of this sort of social ladder climbing. It argues that true freedom doesn't come from stomping other people down while you try to climb your way up toward reaching your dreams.
One Piece has always linked piracy, freedom, and the sea, but this speech by Sabo is one of the clearest examples that really lays out the philosophy of the manga. I think it's really important that after this all three boys say their dreams aloud to one another (perhaps for the first time) which then leads to them becoming brothers. Oda goes from general ideas of freedom, to each character's specific example, and it's only after showing that they're united in these ideas do they forge that ultimate bond.
It's kind of how Luffy ends out picking his crew. Each Straw Hat already had a dream and freedom they're chasing after, them coming together as pirates almost feels inevitable

#my family does this thing#when we've majorly unfucked a room or done chore that we were putting off#or whatever. Any sort of household Improvement.#'Come brag on me.'#I means come look I cleaned/rearranged/did dishes/put away the laundry#and the scripted response is 'oh nice it looks SO much better in here now'#like my mom did this when we were kids.#'girls comr brag on the garage I finally organized it so I can get my car in there'#and we go and 'ooh' and 'aah' and tell her how nice it looked and how she did a good job#and we could have her 'come brag on' us for like doing the dishes or cleaning our rooms#I do it to my wife now too#it's a dialogue that means#'I did a chore and it feels like an Accomplishment even if it objectively wasn't a big thing. Please acknowledge this.'#and#'Wow you sure did do a thing. It has improved our material circumstance even if only in a small way. Thank you for doing it.'#like yeah scrubbing the pans is my Job and it's a Little Task but sometimes it feels like a Big Task#and it's nice to have an Accepted Script where I can just demand 'I have functioned as an independent adult praise me with great praise' - by @thepioden
With news of the death of Paramount+ as they prepare to merge it with all of the mergers they've merged with, let's reflect on its legacy:
It wasn't very good
Remembering when CBS All Access launched and besides Star Trek Disco it only had a random assortment of CBS shows they still owned the rights to, and I opened one soap opera and it immediately tried to load a list of thousands of episodes at once and it crashed the app
Paramount+ had it all. Did it work? No. Did it have a wide library of content? No. Did it feature all of Star Trek, its explicit and only reason for existing? Well they sold off one show to another service, and would sometimes remove episodes for no reason, and never had all the movies at the same time, but,
Paramount+ using AI to generate the rest of a photo of Captain Kirk bc the Star Trek company neither has access to photos of William Shatner playing Captain Kirk or knowledge of what he looks like. Nobody was doing it like them
Self-destructive levels of committing to the bit (this post is about that time in the 70s the Harlem Globetrotters got so into doing antics they forgot to score points and they lost)
Out of control Edwardian youths refuse to clap at production of Peter Pan, force distraught J.M Barrie to pull out rarely seen "Tinkerbell Fucking Dies" ending
You probably know this but shitpost ruining fun fact for anybody who doesn’t:
When the play first was performed, JM Barrie et al were so concerned this might happen that they instructed the orchestra to drop their instruments and clap at this point, just in case
I did not know this and I'm grateful for being informed
Peter Pan edited by Anne Hiebert Alton (2011)
(sorry to interrupt joke post but) this is true!
Children not clapping did happen too, (and some were even expected to have hissed, which was later written into the 1928 playscript and 1911 novel). But my all time favourite anecdote about it is from Pauline Chase (who played Peter)'s intro to Peter Pan's Post Bag 1909:
Children love to clap their hands at the play because then they feel that they are really part of it, and you can see them holding their hands poised ready to seize an opportunity. Their great chance is when I ask them to clap their hands if they believe in fairies, and so save Tink's life. But they are very wrathful if any one claps who has the reputation of being a cynic, and once there was quite an uproar in the front row of the dress circle because of a girl who clapped. Those about her pulled down her arms angrily. "How dare you clap," they cried, "when you know you don't believe in fairies!" There was one dreadfully hard-hearted little boy who came to the theatre not to clap. That was his object for coming, and he came round "behind" to tell me so in the middle of the play. His teeth were firm set. "I won't clap," he said doggedly; "I'm not going to clap." And when the time came he didn't clap; above the clapping of all the others I could hear him shouting from a box, "Peter, I'm not clapping."
(Tink was revived each time anyway)
It must suck being the guy at the BBC entrusted with keeping the tape of the secret true finale of Sherlock hidden. They REALLY thought those Johnlock people would take, like, two days to figure out the ARG. But no. It wasn't good using licence fee money on this, in retrospect, but what's done is done y'know?
And now they have to keep the Billie Piper Doctor special secret until we solve the ARG! No one's even found the ARG yet! Why is the BBC wasting licence fee money like this

a lot of rpf can be explained by the fact that actors are all like that with each other constantly but i never want to say that on here because it feels like telling a 7-year-old santa isn’t real
actors hanging off of each other constantly isn’t a sign that they’re fucking it’s a sign that they were once in a BFA program and never relearned normal boundaries. when actors are fucking and it’s complicated they won’t even stand in the same room with each other.
you have to forgive the printer because it's one of the most machine-ass machines we interact with on a day to day basis. that thing says kerchunk. hardly anything says kerchunk these days. you can't get mad at her when she kerchunks up a little.
Crazy that tech has gotten so bad that we're doing printer forgiveness now
Special shoutout to all the queer, intersex, and trans het folks. Sorry for all the “it’s illegal to be straight this month” jokes you’ll have to endure. Y’all are still very much part of the community.
