Collusion is an eye-opening add-on to the Firebox browser, giving insight to how websites use a visitor’s information. Cookies, an oft misunderstood or ignored part of the web experience are used for the convenience of the user as well as to provide advertising and targeted advertising to website owners. In the case of the Collusion app it is eye opening to see that when I visit the New York Times website to read the news that NYT.com is in fact tracking where I am going on the web using Cookies as well as placing cookies that are linking to other tracking sites such as “yieldmanager.com”. “Yieldmanager.com” is a very interesting entity in that they are an advertising tracking site that is utilized by sites to see how ads were loaded, what pages they were viewed on, etc. This example shows us the power of cookies to the web overall and how it aids the monetization of the web through giving advertisers, website owners/operators valuable insights into how people flow through the web and how they should be targeted. This also goes hand in hand with a user’s web Online Identity, which defines the user and their habits on the web. Cookies are often used to define these users, their habits, and again what kind of consumer they are in terms of marketing and advertising. The points that Online Identity and Cookies bring up, is the fact that they are often working and being developed behind the scenes and many users are unaware of the data and information collected and used about them. There needs to be more transparency in the web to aid with privacy and security, as the Collusion application tracks who is tracking the user a good system would be clear and defined alerts to let the user know when and how their information is being tracked. Standardization for the system and integration into the browser would be ideal to ensure there is a trustworthy entity in charge of alerting the user of the gathering and placing of information in their systems in the form of Cookies and Online Identity development.
