Why do people need subtitles to watch a show in English? I don't get it. What is wrong with the ears of young people?
Modern movies and shows tend to have very unbalanced mixing. Also, a common trend in modern movies is more realistic dialogue (mumbling) that is not as crisp as it was in previous eras of film making.
I’m eating corn chips and they be crunchy and loud as hell and also I’m half deaf I think
My audio processing isn't as fast as my visual processing, and I'm dyslexic. Between hearing things and seeing the text, I can understand what's going on. If I only have one or the other it's a lot harder.
My kid is practicing the flute and the ice maker is right behind my computer.
I've found that on days when my chronic fatigue is bad, using subtitles makes watching movies and shows less exhausting.
Sometimes when I’m overstimulated and processing audio makes it worse, I watch shows/movies on mute with just the subtitles on.
Subtitles are a blessing for neurodivergent folks, people learning the language, and people who are still getting the hang of accents different from their own.

Fanfic tiktok is wild... I see so many people saying shit like "I could never read anything below 60k!!", or "What story can you even tell in under 5k words?" or "A oneshot below 10k isn't even a story!" or "I always filter completed fics by 100k< only!"
And I'm like...
A) which fandoms are you reading fics for where you have this kind of offerings on the regular?
B) have you heard of short stories? If you truly think every story NEEDS to be longform to connect with people, I sincerely feel sorry for you.
C) Average novel length is between 50k to 100k. I'm sorry, but CONSISTENTLY demanding fic writers to push out fics of that length is insane. Just think about it: YOU DEMAND AUTHORS TO PUT OUT FICS THAT COMPARE TO COMMERCIAL NOVELS IN LENGTH (AND QUALITY) AS A BASELINE.
Yall are wilding.
And we’re not even paid for it, we do it for fun! Expecting 3k+ word chapters every week on a regular schedule is again ridiculous, because fanfic authors have real life to deal with outside of all of this.
And don’t get me started on the “I like to read only completed fics” folks… sure, it’s you’re prerogative, but WIPs deserve love too, so don’t dissuade people who actually read WIPs from doing so.
And even if you’re reading a completed piece of work, leave a review! Tell the author so that they know their work from some twelve years back still gives people joy. It’s life affirming.
