Many years ago, I drove up to northern Arizona to deliver medical equipment for my work. The expected delivery was tentative, and I felt this allowed me a little extra time to check out some scenic views if I happened to find any, and so I brought along my pinhole camera and a tripod. The drive was nice, very casual and not rushed like one of my full days of deliver routes in the Phoenix metropolitan area, with the aggressive city traffic and triple digit road rage. This delivery was calming and peaceful. Nearing my destination, I was driving through rocky hills, scattered parts of forest, and lots of nothing—in a good way. I noticed a road up ahead on the left, and slowed down to check it out. The road was dirt and looked surprisingly well maintained for its location. It also slowly wound up and over a long shallow hill, and out of site. At this point of the trip, I didn’t have a ton of extra time for exploring, so I just stopped near the turn-off, got outside to look around, and stretched my legs a little. The weather was calm, and the sun was low and had started casting long shadows, with a soft warm light. The very occasional car passing by but nearly none. Quiet and still, almost like I was already looking at a photograph. It was a comfortable break. I setup up the tripod and camera and aimed it East, towards a row of forest that sat at the edge of a pale field like a bookend.
