Okay I admit it. I recently fell into a spiral of obsession with NCT. This was especially after their BOSS era (like wow they changed the game) and I immediately began to follow the music they’ve been releasing until now - boy am I grateful! Despite not really having much knowledge about them before ‘Boss’, I did listen to their previous songs and heard a lot about the concept of the NCT dream members graduating after the age of 19. I hate to mention it but this comeback is inevitably Mark’s last one *cries in a corner*. Rather than making it melancholy, it’s best to treat it as a celebration and a joyous send off.

Now that most of us know that the comeback is surrounding Mark’s graduation, the fans are bubbling with anticipation for meaningful lyrics and a matured tone in vocals/rap.

1) We Go Up - Title track

With the very first listen I knew this song would be loved by many including myself. When the teaser was released, I was slightly thrown back, as the instrumental and visuals seemed to radiate a dark and more suspenseful vibe. “Maybe they are going in the same direction as ‘GO’?” I thought. However it was the conplete opposite. The beat at the beginning of the song catches everyone’s attention, as well as Jaemin’s prominent voice. You can definitely tell Mark has given his younger members guidance in terms of flow and perhaps pitch, which has helped them to improve significantly. Especially with Jisung, Jeno and Jaemin (three J’s) who have suitable, deep voices for rapping. They have become much more assertive in their style, helping to convey the song in an impactful way. The change in melody half way through the song is likeable for many; reminding the listeners they, as artists, can be versatile. NCT Dream’s concepts always emit the message of youth and freedom which is exactly what this hip hop song perfectly portrays, despite the fact they are slowly growing up. The song itself is energetic nethertheless.

2) 1 2 3

My initial thought upon hearing this song is that it reminded me of Shinee. It’s old school R&B/ hip hop backing track really gave me the urge to get up and dance. For me, it’s fast paced beat gives off a sentimental element to the song (something you’d hear in a club during the 90s - although I’ve never had the chance to experience it, that’s how I imagine it as *laughs nervously*). There are layers in the music where you can hear a distinctive guitar melody in the background, providing a pinch of innocence and fun. The group unites during the chorus to create an easy-listening harmony. Also not to mention the lines “Go shawty” and “Baby just don’t move” that you would typically hear in a funky dance song, makes it even catchier.

3) Beautiful Time

This song is beginning to grow on me. Initially, I refused to listen to anything that would possibly make me emotional and the start of the track gave me instant nostalgia. The vocal line shine in this song - the intonations combined with the acoustic tune is beautiful, just like the name itself. I can already envision the music video; they’re having a road trip and their destination is a park/field surrounded by greenery. It’s sparse and they bask in afternoon sun, dancing around/having a picnic and enjoy what seems like an abundance of time (okay I’m getting too carried away). It somewhat reminds me of We Young era? All in all, it has quite a dreamy sound whilst the adlibs are strong.

4) Drippin’

Well, well, well. Isn’t this one a bop? I’d say it is the most adventurous in terms of beats and is probably one of my favourites musically. This song is definitely snuggled under the label of hip hop with a mix of trap (the bass and discreet sirens in the background combined goes really well). Although the chorus may seem repetitive at times, there is a sense of rebellion against their other songs due to the uniqueness of the tune. The rapping and vocals in this are completely unexpected, however it only shows that they can transition whenever they wish.

I have no comment on the lyrics. We all know we need holy water for that...

5) Dear Dream

If we are talking about sentimental, let me introduce to you this precious song. This one almost provides an insight into each member’s perspective on Mark’s departure. The instrumental is so soothing and graceful that I can picture a montage of NCT Dream’s sweetest moments together as a group. Their close bonded friendship is emphasised through the lyrics. It’s safe to say it’s all so bittersweet - perfect for a good old cry.
