Is this food or art? It looks great and yummy at the same time!!
A bit ugly and off balance, but I made a couple baskets out of old straws. Learned a lot about how to manipulate the material, so in teh future I should be able to do it better. Thinking of 'pre-flattening' the straws to try and make them get tighter in on the weave and not toss the pattern into disarray.
Oh well, good practice!!!

A couple pics from the Demonstration in Austin to Stop the War on Women. (Me and Kristin in the last one).
GREAT speakers!!! Got connected with a few sites/groups for some more support and awareness spreading. Had a wonderful time in Austin!!
So disheartening.
The wife and I are heading to Austin tomorrow for the protest against the war and attacks on women's rights and bodily autonomy, medical privacy, etc.
So many women we talk to don't even know what's going on with all the PParenthood defunding, trans-vag procedure laws, and stuff. Most guys I tell what we are doing/talk to about it are just kind of 'oh' about it.
At least we have a few friends in Austin talked into meeting us there and we'll get to meet up with like minded people from around the state. I really hope that hose we can't or won't march or protest, I hope they can just spread awareness of the shit going on and all the laws and attempts to roll back our treatment of women to the 1950's.
This is a super fantastic idea! imagine doing it with herbs!!
This is very pretty, not sure how it would work at an allotment but I’d really like to give it a go!
It might be nice with tumbling tomatoes
I have to make this :)
Why did Missouri teen Maura Pozek make her prom dress out of cardboard and paper bags?
Because after fashioning the previous two years’ outfits out of Doritos bags and soda can tabs, “I had to top myself somehow.”
More: Cardboard Prom Dress Is Just The Right Fit For This Young Woman : NPR
She’s 17 years old, y’all. Impressive! Also: I love that she made a cardboard boutonniere for her date.
If you missed Maura’s 2011 soda-can-tab dress, our post about it’s here.

One of my favourite parts of planting is admiring all the different shapes and sizes of seeds.
Didn't make the quick-cob oven I wanted to due to rain, so my son and I made a 'TLUD' stove (Top Lit Up Draft), a gassifier. Burns twigs and gets roaring flame (but don't forget the plastic on the can like I did!!)
Call for Help in Organizing and Launching New Teacher Blog!
Lady Teachers – a new blog for teachers interested in change
Hi teachers! My name is Rachel. I’m a high school substitute teacher who cannot stop dreaming of the day when she has her own classroom. I don’t know about you, but I often find the position of substitute teaching to be an isolating one. Teachers, in general, are given too few opportunities to interact, share ideas, and celebrate what an awesome job we’re doing. That’s why I’d like to start an internet community/resource sharing/blog/general celebratory space of teachers who share my passion for social justice and inclusive education. I’d love to hear from you if you are interested in being a part of this new project! My aim in this message is to provide a brief overview of how I see this developing and to solicit lots of voices to help organize and brainstorm ideas!
What?
Lady Teachers is a blog for educators interested in creating accessible and inclusive classrooms and curriculum. It celebrates the teaching profession as one capable of incredible social change.
Lady Teachers is about empowering ourselves as teachers, about sharing meaningful resources, and about modelling the kind of innovative, anti-oppression, anti-racist, equal opportunity, creative, body loving, empathetic, inclusive and radical education that we believe will change our students’ lives and build strong, healthy communities
Teaching is activism.
What We Are Interested In
Social justice, accessibility, gay-straight alliances and queer positive curriculum, community-building, volunteerism, anti-racism, school breakfast programs, social justice clubs, feminism, school gardens, providing space for student voices, building empathy, promoting body love/positivity, diversity, curriculum building, empowering our students.
Why “Lady” Teachers?
The name of the blog came out of a hilarious sign over one of the staff bathrooms in the school where I occasionally teach. The bathroom for male staff members is simply labelled “Male Teachers”, while the one for female staff members is labelled “Lady Teachers”. No doubt, a bathroom for “lady teachers” has perfume & powder puff lined counters, pink sinks, and doily covers on all of the toilets. I’m interested in the feminisation of the teaching profession, so I was all over this little gem. I’m reclaiming the name.
To be clear, “Lady Teachers” is not a blog exclusively for female teachers. It is, however, a blog that addresses inequalities in the education system and the classroom. I felt as though “Lady Teachers” summed that up perfectly.
How Can You Help?
If you are currently working as a teacher, a substitute teacher or a student teacher and are interested in sharing your insights or resources, Lady Teachers would love to hear from you. This blog is dedicated to including all voices in the education system, especially those that are marginalised or otherwise silenced. All contributions are welcome! If you know of any teachers on tumblr who might be interested, please spread the word!
In fact, spread the word far and wide regardless!
The jute strip I started with and finished strip from the shoelaces. Attached a key ring to one end and a bottle opener to teh other :)
Made a 'french bobbin' today and started working it with a scrap piece of jute. After that I took 7 old fat shoelaces I'd had laying around and turned it into a 'rope' of about 20 inches long. After getting the flow of the technique, I found it pretty addictive. Going to have to try using other twines and scrap fabrics.
