i've been really challenging myself to read at least one book per month and so far we're still on track! Ratings so far (based on no criteria other than how fucking locked in I was to reading each one:
Into Thin Air (3/5) I developed a fixation on Mount Everest disasters late last year and dedicated SO much time to consuming information about them. Krakauer loses some points on account of being far from unbiased (which was also fascinating to look into) but I'm ngl I was gripped the whole damn time reading this. Definitely worth researching the 1996 disaster in tandem just to get a fuller picture, though.
The Black Hunger (500000/5) SCREAMS LOUDLY AT MY OWN ASS. I picked this up completely on a whim with no idea what I was getting into and it got its hooks in me so quick. I was reading this in my freetime rather than just during my lunch breaks at work. Had no idea where this thing was going but I was enchanted. I'd eat this book if I wasn't so keen on keeping it.
The Only Good Indians (4/5) Really really enjoyed the writing voice in this one. It had my mouth agape at certain points and I'm very excited to read this author's other works.
The Thief of Always (Children's Book/5) I got this part because I was curious to see how Clive Barker's children's novels compared to his regular stuff, part because it amused me that someone had mistakenly put it in the adult horror's section. It was alright, I could definitely see an Elementary-School-Sid rocking with this.
The Scarlet Gospels (1/5) Biggest disappointment of the year, and I'm shocked it fell so flat for me because I love Hellraiser and The Hellbound Heart and the premise for this novel seemed so fun. It had me second-guessing if I wanted to give any of his other works a shot.
Between Two Fires (5/5) I'm beginning to suspect that religious horror just sort of does it for me. You couldn't have pried this book from my hands if you tried. I have always been a sucker for "grumpy reluctant father figure and weird little girl on a Significant Adventure" and then the depictions of Heaven and Hell and the world coming apart under that strain was such a deeply fun read.
The Starving Saints (2.5/5) AND I'M DEVASTATED ABOUT IT. It was like...mostly alright! There were a good amount of bits I liked (cool imagery, the descriptions of mind-clouded wooziness were really well done, I'm happy for the lesbian cannibal lovers of the world) but I just didn't love it :T

Nature Documentary: these deep sea creatures can withstand crushing pressures of thousands of pounds per square inch!
Me: they’re not withstanding a goddamn thing. The pressure is a part of them. Their interiors and exteriors are equalized. Just because your respiratory system is built around a pair of fragile poppable bubbles-
