i firmly believe that barney is not a western stlyed southern man, that man sounds like hes from the bible belt, grew up sooooouthern baptist, and too poor for anything newer than whatever his eldest brother got second hand, he was expected to stay within 20 miles of where he grew up, his daddy is still drinking coors light on the half rotted porch in a wife beater taking pot shots at squirrels that get a lil too close to his truck, barney still gets caught between wanting to be smart with his money or impulsively spending his whole paycheck on the newest release of the sneaker brand everyone at his school wanted, make him look richer than he is (a more moral and righteous man than he is), his teeth are too tar stained for someone as young as he is to have started smoking when he could buy the cigarettes himself, black mesa has more people in it than his hometown (it has a population that is a sizable portion of his home county too), he was the first of his family to go to college (first to drop out too), he sees a gravel road and feels like hes come home, he still feels the need to hoard food from others in his home, hes never trusted a cop before but hell be damned if he doesnt respect them for the work they do (is he worthy of respect yet? has he made something more of himself? his wages must be more than half his siblings wages or more combined)
