In the movie The Greatest Showman, there is a character with dwarfism called Tom Thumb. He was a real person and this is his story.

His name was not Tom Thumb, his name was Charles Stratton and he was born in 1838. When he was just four years old P.T. Barnum “adopted” him in exchange for $3 per week paid to his family. The reasoning for this was because of both his rare small stature and Barnum’s ambitious ideas for exploiting people with physical abnormalities. Charles was whisked away from his home. He was forced to perform for the public’s amusement across the country and then through most of Europe, even for Queen Victoria. In 1863 he was wed to Lavinia Warren, another little person in Barnum’s traveling circus. There is strong evidence to suggest that P.T. Barnum arranged the wedding and forced the two to marry one another.

The wedding was such a media success that he then decided that the two should have a baby. Charles and Lavinia could not have a child of their own so Barnum would “rent” babies for them to pose with in photos and then sell the photos for the public’s enjoyment. For most of his adult life Charles was put in front of crowds to sing, dance, and do impressions. At the age of just 45, he passed away. This is the true summarized story of Charles Stratton.
