The world weighs heavy but luckily art is great! I hope you're all having a good Audio Drama Sunday, my friends.
🔔 @goodpointepodcasts' Someone Just Like You never misses, and this week's episode was especially chilling. "Don't Look For Lady Bluebell" is about safety gone wrong, about a monster that's much worse than you can imagine, and how danger can twist you into something monstrous. The imagery of the bells on ribbons is going to stick with me for sure, and Atticus Jackson just kills it on this one. If you're ever in the market for a new anthology horror show, you can't do much better than Someone Just Like You.
🙃 Small Victories is back baybeeee, and oh man what a banger. It is so difficult and so important in the depths of recovery to be able to picture a good future for yourself. So it's gotta be a REAL ISSUE when that future version of you is like, HEY, DON'T BLOW THIS FOR US. What a genius setup for this season. Rest in pieces Marisol, I guess good luck with your recovery. Don't lose that future! No pressure!
💎 @dustwalkerpod's new episode does a bunch of my favorite kind of worldbuilding: put that guy (or magic teenage girl) in a dang situation and now they have to deal with it. Watching Kove try to pretend to be an aide (and honestly not even try very hard) did a bunch of work for the lore of this story and the characterization of both Kove and Arius. I'm fascinated by the way this culture is building strata on strata of oppression, and I really want to watch it all burn to the ground. You can imagine how much I enjoy Kove's perspective in this show based on that, and I'm thrilled to find out what will happen now that she knows exactly how far out of her depth she is.
🩸 @starstrider-productions' Dracula: 2004 is back also!!!!! Just in time for me to remember how harrowing this second act is, as we watch Lucy's "mysterious" ""illness"" progress. This Van Helsing is LEGENDARY, she keeps all of the alternating weird humor and seriousness of the original and loses none of the mysteriousness, despite being (still! just like the OG!) a scientist first and foremost. What a relief to Lucy as well, having a doctor take you seriously, for once. I am waiting for the next episode with my hands over my eyes, peeking through my fingers.
❓How fun was @killjamxxx's in-character Q&A? Not much to say here analysis-wise, but I did absolutely lose count of how many times I cackled. I missed them so much.
That's it for me! Have you tried a new show this week? Looked into Mechadova Engine or Something's Amiss at Juniper's House? Give 'em a try!
Happy Audio Drama Sunday! There were so many exciting trailers this week—Derelict and Small Victories both coming out with season three!! I can’t wait. In the meantime, here’s what this week brought:
⭐️ On the Stitches feed (which is where Two Flat Earthers Kidnap A Free Mason lives), the folks at @goodpointepodcasts have been re-releasing The One Stars, which is one of those shows that I always meant to get around to. I am delighted to discover how funny it is. The humor is definitely crunchy and cynical, but given that it first came out during the spring of 2020, I find that particular characterization very fair. Our host, Negative Nancy, is a wretched creature on a spaceship all alone, with only an over-positive AI for company (not played or written by an AI but instead by Blythe Renay of Kingmaker Histories). It's a cathartic type of humor and I'm enjoying it a lot.
🌬️Look, it's not a groundbreaking opinion to love @midnightburgr, it's a good freakin show. That said, the episodes that focus on the Mucklewains resonate with me heavily as one of those Christian types. It is really refreshing to have my beliefs engaged with seriously (that discussion of Abraham and Isaac on the mountain!) in a sci-fi setting. I just appreciate it, you know? Ask me about how I can encapsulate this episode in some Bible verses. And besides all that, I love any chance we get to see the diner crew outsmart the bad guys--Graham Rowat makes an excellent villain.
📝 Ghosts in the Burbs is back baybeeee! With a cozy mystery centering on an absolutely unbearable Parent-Teacher Association that I, as a teacher, would hate to have to interact with. I love the way Liz Sower builds characterization, introducing our characters (suspects?) one by one. Will this be a murder? A case of stolen money? Will there be ghosts or demons? I am psyched to see what Sower's cooking up.
I'm really loving Christmas Diner by @goodpointepodcasts because it's basically a multi-episode adaptation of that tweet I love that was like "the woman in front of me at taco bell is asking for the 'chocobo supreme' and will not work with the staff to figure out what she means"
I started listening to Two Flat Earthers Kidnap a Freemason by @goodpointepodcasts AND AURHGGHHG IM ON EP 3 AND I LOVE THEM ALREADY the sound design is so well done and the characters and their dynamics are so entertaining heehee … hopping from Malevolent to Two Flat Earthers has been such. gorgeous whiplash

Well well well, look who has time to write an audio drama Sunday post this week!
🎭 I have the same feelings as everyone else about @224bbaker this week (which is to say AAAAAAAAA). Truly there is no experience more mortifying and better for the soul than improv. And as usual, I love the team stumbling ass over teakettle into the right answer right at the end. This team is KILLING it this season.
🎬 I've been listening to Good Story Guild's new podcast, In Media Res, and y'all...holy crap. Do you like messy emotional drama? Do you like real world implications? Do you want a no-punches pulled look at an industry that claims to be about art? Then watch best friends Alex and Coen attempt to make good on The Lucky Break of a lifetime, and watch every single thing it costs them. The episode this week nearly killed me.
🌚 I find that there are so many good horror anthologies that it's possible to get lost in the weeds sometimes. Thirteen, Nightlight, and Waterlogged all do a really good job of distinguishing themselves. But no one is scarier or better than @goodpointepodcasts' Someone Just Like You. And this episode....sheesh, Sarah Golding is an absolute legend, and the cadence and familiar commercial nature of the way our narrator talks about moon rock is...chilling.
🌺 My beloved Bardic Hearth used this week's episode to open up the worldbuilding around the pantheon in this fantasy world. It is so fun to hear gods bickering like children, and it does an excellent job of setting up the stakes of this tiny inn in this dangerous forest. Something's Up. I can't wait to find out what.
🕵️♂️ I've been listening to Mission: Rejected, and folks, if you've been looking for an audio drama sitcom, this is the one for you. It's fast-paced and madcap and hilarious. The premise is that these are the adventures of the backup team to their James Bond analogue, and they're only sometimes competent. It's a sitcom format with a wholesome center, I just listened to the season finale and I am worried about my girl McGrath, is she good???
⛽️ I've also been catching up on Tales of THATTOWN, a horror comedy set in a fictional Appalachian Alabama town, made by the people who live there, lovingly and incessantly razzing their home. It is so funny. It feels like hanging out with those dudes you know who make questionable choices but are so much fun. Sure, Tyler, you're a wizard and an IT expert, let's go check out this abandoned rest stop that's definitely a Jigsaw trap. Why not.
I'm trying to wrangle words out of my brain to get Inn Between written, but I'm also trying to fight my way through the last few weeks of school. Your thoughts and prayers are appreciated. As are your tips, if you feel like it.
