Fragonard - The Swing- from the Rococo Period

At the time unmarried women could not be around unmarried young men. They also couldn’t push themselves on swings. In the painting there is an older gentleman accompanying her and pushing the woman gently on the swing while a dandy (that is what young men were called at the time and place) strategically lays himself down so he can see up the woman’s skirts while she swings. Even better the woman’s foot points to the little cupid statue who holds a finger to it’s lips as if to say quiet, discretion.

California based designer Annica Lydenberg drags in discarded items from the street and painting self deprecating phrases on them. Gui Machado to photographed them on pristine, bright happy backgrounds, producing both a number of physical objects as well as a set of prints for this series.
