Sneak Peek
Running. Darkness. Small and sweaty palms gripping mine, tugging me forward faster then my own remarkably tiny legs could normally go. Where am I? Confusion and a heart breaking fear made my chest tight. I couldn’t figure out what was causing the panic. I felt like an animal, like a mouse hopelessly attempting to escape a cat.
“Who are we running from?” I whispered, my voice raspy- exhaustion obvious.
The other person tugged me forward even harder then.
“Mikael. He’s angry at me again.”
It was then that I could see a light approaching, and then a small cottage became clear in the distance. I looked at the person who’d been guiding me, to see a blonde child. A boy who couldn’t have been older than ten. His clothes were made from strictly wool and animal skins, and the frown on his face seemed permanent. I’d never seen that expression of worn down sorrow on someone so young.
“What’s he angry for?” I asked, taking mental note of what I was wearing- which resembled that of my own childhood. Eight year old me wouldn’t be caught dead outside of her bright green overalls. They were tacky to most, but I enjoyed being different. In front of this person though; I must have looked like an alien.
“Who are you? Wait-” His baby blue eyes shot to the floor, then back up.
He must have realized he didn’t care. Though we’d come to a stop a few feet before the hut, he didn’t waste another minute for me to answer. He took off running with my arm in the same deadlock as before. He swerved our path around the hut and made a bee line for the entrance to the woods, and just as I was about to force him to explain…we came upon a giant hole in the mossy earth.
“You need to jump in there” he said to me slowly and harsh, like I was an idiot and we were not children, pointing. “Mikael is coming.”
And then I woke up.
