Ishida didn’t know why, but Light seemed a bit stressed. Was it from all the homework or the sudden exam? He had wondered. But he only shook off such thoughts and continued to walk with him.

Light started on the walk to his house after Ishida reassured him that the walk was too far.

“So– how have you been doing with the hectic school schedule? I myself find that there’s too much busywork, but… that could be just me.”

He looked over at the other. Of course, Light couldn’t care less about Ishida’s academics.

“It is a bit much, yes, but I am trying. I mean, I am passing with all A’s and such. So it’s good.” Ishida smiled.

He walks with Light with a smile that is still plastered on his face for some reason.

“Oh. Good for you. I would say the same, but... I think everyone knows where I stand academically by now.” It was no secret that Light was the top student in the country. Light thrived on the glory and recognition that being the best brought him.

Light laughed a little at his own statement before continuing, “I’ll be glad once this exam is over.”

“Not a problem,” the young man shook his head just subtly. “Though… I’m a little curious as to what experiences you have that would lead you to be so quick to worry.”

“I…” Ishida still showed the smile he had, while he looked toward him. “It’s…It’s just something in the past, don’t worry about it.”

Light gave a nod in acknowledgement. “If you would be uncomfortable talking about it, I’m not going to persist,” Light looked ahead of him for a moment, in the direction he intended to walk. “Would you like to join me on my walk home? It’s a little bit of a ways, but it would give us opportunity to talk.” In all honesty, Light had no desire to walk with someone, but he let his polite valedictorian ‘role model’ persona take the lead with this particular interaction.

“Thank you, Light.” Ishida nodded as he smiled. “Oh yes. Yes I’d love to walk with you.”

I hoped he would decline the offer-- oh well, I guess a walk home with another person might at least prove a good distraction for when Ryuk tries to talk to me in public.

Light’s annoyance never showed on his face. On the contrary, he appeared thankful for the company.

“Are you sure it’s not too out of the way for you? I’d hate to make you walk so far just for conversation.”
