It’s so easy to make her bounce–it is just unfortunate that he had done so while she was rinsing the trey, causing water to hit her shirt. “Goodness…!” After sending the man a brisk glance, she is quick to reach over and shut off the faucet. 

Such a peculiar thing to ask of her. Much so, when she turns to face him she has her head all cocked to one side–entirely unnecessary of her, he couldn’t have laid it out any more simply. Could it be that he really believed she wouldn’t kiss him of her own volition…?

“Of course I did… Why would I do anything I didn’t mean to…?”

“ ! “  the man fishes through his back pocket, pulling out the neatly folded linen handkerchief that he had held onto and hand-washed after helen used it to soak up the tea he’d spilled. duncan dabs at the wet fabric of her shirt, his mouth still burning at the sensation of her kiss  —-  as he presses the corner of helen’s handkerchief against her chest, he is acutely aware of the tension thickening in the air.

i don’t know what to think.  he had this thought more often than not, and it agitated him.  the total lack of answers, the blank space above his head  —-  he closes his digits around the handkerchief, his proximity close. dark eyes raise to meet helen’s.   “  you surprised me.  ”  he answers, thinking that it would have been wise to brush off the entire situation.  certainly, she wanted to act like it didn’t happen  —-  but he felt stunned. 

L had used to read the ways of pathos like the back of his own hand. he felt disconnected from that former letter. he certainly wasn’t anticipating such a romantic display of affection. now, the visceral desire to kiss helen again is rushing in. there was no way to prepare himself. he feels dizzy.
