Otabek and Yuri are childhood friends

They learn about the concept of soulmates through school at the approximate age of thirteen (yeah in this AU they’re the same age)

They discuss their birth tattoos enthusiastically. Yuri’s really mundane, like, ‘I like you’. And Otabek’s is just ‘Okay’.

Ten years go by. They’re twenty-three. All their friends have found their respective soulmates one after the other

Yuri is annoyed. Not even in a regular conversation did the exact phrase ‘I like you’ ever come up.

Otabek don’t know what to say, he have met a couple of people who had said ‘Okay’ to him, but neither of them had had his response tattooed on them

Yuri jokingly says to Otabek that if neither of them have found their soulmate by the age of thirty they just have to fuck each other. Otabek is unsure. There’s a lot of taboo surrounding romantic relationships outside the soulmate one. ‘People will talk’ and ‘What if our soulmates finds out’ are amongst his arguments. Yuri responds that if their soulmate truly is their soulmate they will understand. It calms Otabek down a bit

They reach twenty seven. Yuri convinces Otabek to at least kiss him. Otabek caves in and they kiss and kiss and kiss and kiss. Some buttons are unbuttoned, some fabrics are lifted, some skin is touched. They stop once they realize in what direction it’s heading. ‘Maybe not yet’ says Yuri and rests his forehead against Otabek’s

Yuri stays more and more often at Otabek’s place. More kisses are shared

They reach thirty. A look is shared between them. That’s all it takes for them to spend the night together

Some of their friends ask about their relationship. Some think it’s inappropriate, some thinks it’s sad, some suggest that they’re spending too much time with each other to be able to find their true soulmates

Neither Otabek nor Yuri actually dignify their questions with an answer. But they’re talking. Everyone’s talking.

They continue to spend nights with each other, but with increasing guilt. Both of them knows what they’re doing is wrong, but neither of them wants it to stop

‘What if we are soulmates?’ Otabek asks. None of them actually remembers how their first conversation went. They met in kindergarten. They could’ve said anything. They decide to go and ask their kindergarten teacher, but finds out that she’s dead since long
