Rhinocerous - Happily Ever After: Fairy Tales For Every Child

Chimera/monster - no particular animal motif really sticks out, as seen in the original tale and Disney's adaption. This one appears to be the most common.

Lion - this seems to be a very popular image for the Beast, after Jean Cocteau's version made in 1946, and has been used for the Beast at least twice: Shelly Duvall's Fairy Tale Theater, and Burbank's Beauty and the Beast.

Elephant - a stop-motion animation film from the Soviet Era depicts the Beast as a barely-humanoid elephant (honorable mention: the original version also depicts the Beast as having an elephant trunk).

"We should probably go to bed soon."

"Just one more chapter."

"Don't enable me."

"I'm invested, I can't help it."

"I am, too. But, I'm also sure that the rest of the household's already gone to bed."

She nodded at the wall clock. He checked the time.

"...I suppose it is late, isn't it?"

"Mm-hm."

"Well, there's a blanket right here." He reached over and pulled it off the chair closest to the fire. "We could sleep right here."

"Here on the floor?" she grinned.

"Yes. There's no rule against sleeping somewhere other than a bed."

"I suppose "the Master of the castle" would know." She teased. He simply smiled back.

"Very well, then." She settled down, pushed him back slightly, her hand on his chest. "But you're going to be my pillow." She turned around and leaned back, making herself comfortable before he had anything to say about it. He chuckled, a short, amused sound she could feel in his chest.

She pulled the blanket a little closer, and laid her book open in her lap.

"Can you read it from here?"

"Mm-hm."

"Good. Now, I think we were here..."

As the clock ticked on later and later into the night, she started to yawn, and her eyes would flutter, until finally, her breathing slowed, and the book slid from her lap to her side.

Carefully, he took the book away, closed it neatly, and placed it on the side table. Slowly lying back, an arm under his head for a pillow, he stared up at the cieling, the fire dying down, darkening the room.

He looks at her like he just realized what love is.

Mulan usually appears in marketing and merchandise as she did at the beginning of her movie, with long hair (sometimes longer than it ever was there) and an extremely feminine outfit. Even though that version of her was explicitly oppressed, inauthentic and unhappy.

You'd think a series aimed at young girls would make the same mistake, right?

WRONG. The hairstyle she ends with and a full suit of armour! She's here to kill her enemies and inspire little girls to believe in themselves, and she's all out of enemies. She demonstrates her cleverness and creativity by using the environment to overcome the challenge. Her awesomeness isn't just about strength and fighting. It's the same balance the movie strikes, between the girly dolls and the 'girlboss' remake.

Ariel is often accused of abandoning her family and 'true self' to chase a man, which is cruel and inaccurate. Firstly, her true self is a passionate, independent anthropologist who loves human society and was being stifled under the sea, but is able to thrive on land. But secondly, she does value her family despite her dad being very antagonistic for much of her story. Her cameo here has her be a bridge between human and mermaid, just like she always wanted. She highlights that the different peoples have the most important things - like love, specifically for family - in common, and helps Sofia reach out and make a connection that saves the day.

Snow White is still great with animals, which is adorable. She’s learned from her experience of getting poisoned to be more careful, and tells Sofia to trust herself and use critical thinking when things are suspiciously good. Her naivety in the film is acknowledged in a way that makes her seem more intelligent, not less.

Belle and Rapunzel both give advice based on their love interests’ character development. Not only do they show that humility, responsibility, compassion and selflessness are deeply admirable traits in men and everyone, but they make it clear that they didn't 'fix' their partners. The Beast and Eugene redeemed themselves through their own choices. People should be held accountable for their actions, good and bad, while having the chance to grow.
