I didn't feel conflicted about reading porn as a teenager, and I don't care if teens read my porn now. Anyone bleating about how this extremely normal activity is harmful has been poisoned by conservative religious twaddle, no matter how much they claim to be anti-censorship.

The people who have a really rough time of it are often in marginal offline situations where it's easy to deprive them of employment or housing or the like. The other big source of harm is mental health stuff where the person has at least a touch of moral OCD and/or much of their support network and social circles are online and highly susceptible to this kind of crap. A hate campaign can easily deprive them of all of their friends overnight.
The actual danger of law enforcement taking some "They harmed an anime character!" chucklefuck seriously is very, very low. It also varies by geographical location.
And the danger of any of this is far lower than the chilling effect of the fear itself. Creating an environment of pervasive fear and self-censorship is the actual point of much of this discourse. Most people are far too lazy to try anything more than that, and the few who will go for it are often too incompetent.
If you live somewhere where you can't afford for offline people to know you write gay fanfic or you have a vengeful ex trying to steal your kids, sure, be worried. For most people, the best defense is preemptively ridding yourself of fake friends.
I admit that I haven't ever suffered much for it, but I've been out as queer since high school in the 90s. That was less ballsy of me than it would have been for most teens in the 90s, but even so...
I am not willing to be closeted to placate the people who pedojacket queers for existing. I am certainly not willing to bow to scared, stupid emotional toddlers and trolls online who are trying to ruin our spaces before the platforms even censor us.
These pieces of shit are directly attacking queer culture existing (even if some of the drama is over het fanfic too), and they should be treated to the same violent, public, outrageous resistance that made a space for us in the first place.
It is both my duty and my pleasure to publicly tell this crowd to go fuck themselves.
