glimpse of chels

i’ll give the coffee drowned voice caught in the bulb 

of my throat the stars she stays up for and the 

morning sunrise she never gets to see. 

it’s an awful bite when you’re nipping your own tongue, 

a coyotes pasture swallowing itself howl by howl 

each time the yarrow moon grows and blooms and dies. 

did you know the only difference between a field and a pasture 

is the skip of a rock between life and death?

love is all too familiar to me. the butterflies squeezing your stomach. the pins & needles pricking a little too deep. the anxiety crushing your spine a little too fine, like angel dust in your lungs.

i felt stronger than the forest growing inside of me. i blossomed into a boy who you didn’t dream of. i forced myself to fit into the cut-out shape you needed me to be. i broke my fingers trying to find yours.

the icicles from your mouth melted on my skin. the apples fell from the trees in my lungs. i filled up with endless possibilities. yet you chose to spill me out to find the person i wasn’t meant to be.
