Northern Italians be like “BLACK LIVES MATTER. SAY NO TO RACISM. I CAN’T BREATHE”. And then go “actually southern Italians are inferior”.

And quite often this perceived “inferiority” is based off of perverse pseudo racial ideas based on the south being “nearer Africa”.

Uhm, idk. I’ve only heard that from non-Italian people on the internet, mainly Anglos. In my experience, it’s always been about how intellectually, linguistically and culturally inferior we are compared to northern Italians. For some northern Italians, even southern Italy is ugly, wild, ungoverned and uncivilised. Northern Italians often even act surprised or incredulous southern Italy can have, like, brilliant doctors. 

On the Italian American side of things this stuff even traveled to North America with them. Both the Italian Canadians and the Italian Americans always revered the northern parts as “better”, my father’s Calabrese family always saying “well at least we’re not Sicilians!” (Which, if my 23andme proves anything, it’s that we are indeed part Sicilian). According to my mother, who’s family ancestry is mostly concentrated in the area close to the Swiss Alps, older family members who had all mostly died before I was born used to say things a bit too prejudiced to type out about the south of Italy, emphasizing how poor and uneducated it was, even though they themselves left Italy for Canada to escape crushing poverty.

This breaks my heart.
