I’m anti-sjw and the way the community keeps using the r word is painfully embarrassing.
It’s like they’re still in elementary school and think using that word makes them cool and tough.
What retarded? no we use it because it’s a word. The usage of a word does not dictate ones intelligence or maturity. I wish we could destroy this ridiculous myth. Some words are just a part of someones Vocabulary. Plus why do you even care? I noticed OP censored it.
here have a video
You don’t have to be unintelligent and immature to do and say unintelligent, immature things.
You can be the smartest man alive, and still say something really, really ridiculously incorrect or misinformed.
You can be the most mature individual in the world, and still act childish or offensive from time to time.
It’s called “being human.” Humans are multifaceted creatures. We aren’t just “mature” and “immature.” We aren’t just “intelligent” and “unintelligent.” Most of us are a mixture.
Calling people you disagree with retarded is immature. I don’t care how mature you are in every other way. You’re still doing something immature. If you don’t like it, tough noogies.
I call people retarded when they are being retarded. It’s not disagreement. it’s when they are being stupid. ignorant. retarded.
Saying calling someone retarded when they are being so is like saying calling someone ignorant when they are being so is immature. and If you truly believed your first paragraph you wouldn’t have implied the immaturity of anyone who uses the word with your statement.
Note the distinction of the word being both dated and offensive.
Comparing “ignorant” and “retarded” is a false equivalency. “Ignorant” has not been historically used as a slur against a group of people. “Retarded” has been.
Of course, the word “retard” also has other, inoffensive uses, but, well, y’all aren’t using it that way, are y’all? Y’all are using it in a deliberately derogatory fashion towards individuals you perceive as not as or not acting as intelligent or cunning or clever as you.
When you call someone “retarded,” it really does sound like y’all think y’all are still in elementary school. You’re certainly acting like you are. My later statements don’t contradict my initial sassy remark. You may be very mature and intelligent, but you’re acting like you’re still on the playground, where this sort of behavior is considered cool and edgy.
You’re behaving in an immature manner. Again, if you don’t like it, tough noogies.
Quite frankly you are being oversensitive on the issue. yes it has it’s roots in being an offensive slur. But so do many words. and yet they are still used to this day when language has changed. You also did not watch the video apparently. And again I have already stated that there is nothing cool nor edgy about the word. it’s just that a fucking word. Just like when people say the word nigga. It’s an offensive word that has become common use in today’s society. and today the only people that get offended are the ones that are over sensitive. Words only matter in context. I could see if I walked up to someone with downs and called them retarded, Sure beat my ass for that. call me out. I would be being a prick. but when someone is showing willful ignorance, calling them Retarded has no bearing on the word being used as a slur. Are you also one of those people that gets mad when someone uses the word crazy?
Jesus Christ crazy and retarded are not the same fucking thing. Just stop using it, it’s gross, offensive and has had a negative connotation for a long ass time. A connotation which HASNT changed. Unless you’re saying alcohol retards your digestive system it’s a stupid fucking word to use. Find another. How about ‘moron’ or ‘idiot’ or ‘imbecile’.
You’re acting like a fucking 14 year old defending your use of this clearly controversial term.
Consider for a moment the dysphemism treadmill.
Euphemisms often evolve over time into taboo words themselves, through a process described by W.V.O. Quine, and more recently dubbed “the euphemism treadmill” by Steven Pinker. This is the well-known linguistic process known as pejoration. When I had first heard of the concept I thought that it was a result peoples tendency to be offended by labels. I had heard of the Euphemism Treadmill occurring with the word Black being a euphemism for Colored which was originally a euphemism for Negro and so on. But after seeing how there is an opposite trend, words that are purposefully offensive to becoming more mainstream( the Dysphemism Treadmill), my thoughts have changed. Our culture wants to use the offensive term so when a euphemism is created it is co-opted because it is simply the new negative term. If some grew up using Colored as an insult for Black or “African American” people then when the term black or “African American” is introduced you put it on as a mask to the word Colored. And you will use the euphemism to seem polite but in reality it has the same connotations as the original word. In some cases, the euphemism may be used mockingly and become dysphemisms. And a word goes from being a dysphemism to being a more neutral word because we want to be able to use the negative or scandalous word. Then in order to seem polite we deny the words real meaning. Then as time goes on people learn the word with out its real meaning.
And example of the euphemism treadmill is that idiot, imbecile, and moron were once neutral terms for a person of toddler, preschool, and primary school mental ages, respectively. The word mentally retarded was pressed into service to replace Idiot, imbecile, and moron because negative connotations tend to crowd out neutral ones. Now that too is considered rude, used commonly as an insult. As a result, new terms like developmentally disabled, mentally challenged and special have replaced retarded. .
In these cases, notions of profanity, obscenity and other words once called “offensive” are later described as “objectionable,” then “questionable,” and in some cases, they reach near or outright acceptability. One modern example is the word “sucks”. “That sucks” began as American slang for “that is very unpleasant”, and is shorthand for “that sucks cock”, referring to fellatio; along with the exactly synonymous phrase “that blows”, it developed over the late-20th century from being an extremely vulgar phrase to near-acceptability. Likewise, scumbag, which was originally a reference to a used condom, now is a fairly mild epithet.
The same may be said of the use of “screw,” often used as a dysphemism for sexual intercourse, is now in not such usages as “to screw up” (to make a major mistake).
Sometimes a term will go from being a euphemism to being a dysphemism and then go back to being a euphemism. “Queer” and “gay,” for example, both started as euphemisms for “homosexual,” and then got on the euphemism treadmill and became insults—but are now the preferred adjectives amongst the gay community themselves. Though This is often the result of intentional reappropriation campaigns. Source
I would argue the mature course of action is to let people eager to use it, who are quick to speak rhetorically about how it isn’t disparaging toward mentally challenged people, to use it freely. History shows that this eagerness to use it will, over the course of a generation, dilute and decouple it’s meaning from the obscenely derogatory meaning that offends you. The term bad, probably the least offensively negative term in English language today, was at one time a derogatory term for effeminate men and transwomen (Baeddel).
So overuse will eventually defang the word “retarded” whereas continuously reinforcing it’s taboo will simply ensure it’s potency as a strongly defamatory term indefinitely for people who are keen to use it for the explicit purpose of upsetting mentally challenged people. Perhaps then, the mature course of action is to stand back and let it be used freely for any purpose until its rendered completely meaningless as a vicious insult.
This is an interesting argument. I’d known about the concepts but I never knew the name for either.
like the problem with the tumblr community is that no one is allowed to safely fuck up
if i was my uneducated ignorant little 14 year old self y’all would have ripped me a new one and probably scarred me for life
and that’s so scary tbh, that a community of adults would and DO witch hunt and harass minors over things they’re being children about
How to gently acknowledge and inform a person:
Check their blog/content/about me. How old is this person? If they are still in HS/under 18, remember that this person is a minor and needs guidance, not chastising.
Second, look at a little bit of their tumblr. Are they going through serious mental health struggles(Depression/suicide/etc)? Please take this into account when formulating your response.
Finally, evaluate why you follow this person to begin with. Now, if you are 19 and following a 17 year old, then you are within the same age bracket and can talk to this person as if you are talking to a peer. 12/13/14/15 year olds are still formulating their opinions of the world, and you being nasty to them isn’t going to help inform their opinion. So why do you follow a 13 year old? Would you hang out with this person IRL if you two were in the same location? Would it be weird(mentally and physically) for you to hang out with this person? If the answer is yes, unfollow their blog and step away from the situation.
NOW, here is how you formulate a PRIVATE ASK OR FAN MAIL to someone who has said or done something problematic. Shaming them publicly for ignorance/limited world view is a great way to close someone off or harass them, and you don’t want to do either of these things. Online bullying can take on many forms, and being an adult harassing a young teenager adds to online culture problems
“Hey! I noticed that you reblogged (x). I wanted to let you know that this is really hurtful to (x) group, and it is offensive because of (x) reason. I just wanted to let you know because you may not have known. Thank you for receiving this message and listening”
This points out what is wrong, why it is wrong, and does not demand anything of the person you are sending this message to
And then you step away. Do not send this person 20 asks. Do not threaten them. STEP AWAY.
If they engage, respond, or ask further questions, answer them kindly. If they don’t respond, don’t continue to engage.
REMEMBER: you were 14 once too. You said and did things that you cringe at now. You said and did things that were problematic. Getting yelled at was not what you needed. You grew up, you learned, you changed. Let others do the same.
tbh i think a lot of this is useful for engaging with pretty much anyone that’s made a mistake like this, but is definitely especially important when it comes to interacting with people notably younger than you!
