“Do you remember anything from last night?”

THE MORNING AFTER SENTENCE STARTERS || Accepting

She woke with a jolt. Unfamiliar place, unfamiliar bed, and an all-too familiar ache stirred her into consciousness. It was a good thing that, despite the heavy fog that filled her head, Tonks recognized Remus beside her - his presence immediately calmed her && kept her from grabbing her wand and using it. ( her wand which, if you did not know, had been tossed onto the nearby nightstand next to her shirt and perhaps the most tattered bra she owns ).

His question almost catches her off-guard, and she squints at him. One hand reaches up to brush her matted pink hair out of the way of her blurry eyes. “... I think I have an idea,” she tells him. It did not take much careful consideration to recognize that - well... they visited shag city, apparently, and shag city did not have very comfortable sheets.

“How’d you sleep?”

It’s a slightly awkward question - she asks it more to fill the silence, recognizing in that instance that she - Tonks: Metamorphagus, Auror, Girl Wonder - had absolutely nothing to say, && so looked to Remus, hoping he would carry the conversation better than she thought she might.

This AU can apply to essentially any time period in Tonks’ life after she has become an Auror. Given the constant danger that Aurors place themselves in, the likelihood of experiencing a life-changing wound is fairly high.

In v; muddled memories ( blank stares at blank pages ), Tonks suffers a serious brain injury when hunting down a dark wizard. Because wizards tend to have solutions for Muggle issues, for the purposes of this verse - the brain injury results from the spells used against Tonks and, much like the Cruciatus curse, left her with lasting mental deficits.

After an initially poor prognosis, Tonks recovers - somewhat. Her short and long term memory suffer ( she recognizes faces / knows when she should remember someone, but can’t make the connections ). She is prone to confusion, especially in the beginning, and her short term memory fails her more often ( have to tell her things a few times for her to complete simple tasks, such as remembering to cross the house to bring back a cup, she’ll forget what she was doing ).

Her career is over. She is honorably discharged from the Auror Department ( part of her recognizes that this is a horrible loss, but she doesn’t grasp the magnitude of this at first - perhaps due to shock ).

This also has implications for her family life as Tonks/Dora would be in a position where she needs more assistance than she has ever needed before.

hc. Despite Tonks’ inability to behave herself, her professors could say very few bad things about her grades. She was an excellent student and rarely, if ever, turned her work in late. She wasn’t necessarily adept at every subject, but she studied often given that Quidditch players had to do well in their classes && her decision in 4th year to become an Auror.

To become an Auror, Tonks had to take at least 5 NEWT classes. She took DADA, Transfiguration, Potions, Herbology, && Charms.

Tonks scored an O in all but Charms, which she had an E in ( Tonks wailed about that given that it was her last examination, and they were, in fact, Nastily Exhausting ).

Tonks particularly excelled in Potions, with it being her second-strongest subject ( next to Transfiguration ). actually, she enjoyed some of the classwork. She did well in && liked Potions, which went hand-in-hand with Herbology; DADA was... more fun when they applied the lessons, rather than learning about theory; Transfiguration made sense to her as it practically ran in her blood; && Tonks liked to bother Flitwick.

Growing up as Nymphadora ( shudder ), Tonks... did not have much in the way of gender neutral clothes. It wasn’t until one of her Muggleborn friends introduced her to alternative fashion && how to boldly wear so-called provocative styles of dress.

It left an impression on Tonks who used Hogwarts to embrace a somewhat more masculine style of dress and feel more comfortable in her own skin.

She also appreciated the confidence that went along with the clothes.
