tw parent illness and death
It's been said the women in Italy are more dangerous than shotguns, and Giada Rosalia Santoro wasn't just the very proof of that—she was the mold.
Born in the heart of Milano, her life was shaped by her father's love and fierce protection—an Italian Mafioso who longed for a son to continue his legacy but was blessed with four beautiful daughters instead, his precious jewels he sought to keep safe. Her mother, gorgeous and strong, a Brazilian beauty queen that was sought after by many, many men, taught Giada what it looked like to wield your power quietly and without ever raising her voice—to play by the rules and still get exactly what you want.
For eldest daughters always made the toughest of sons.
Growing up Giada had to learn this the hard way—a force from a young age, yet her father only ever saw Giada was the principessa and apple of his eye. Though she was surrounded by the family business, daddy’s little girl was kept as in the dark as much as possible when it came to her father's dirty work—a man’s business as he would say. But that never stopped Giada, and the more he kept her away the more she challenged and tested his limits.
By the time she was ten, her father had uprooted their family from Milano to California to join her grandfather and uncle in the Santoro Mafia he would later become underboss of. Giada found herself a new playground in the states and was often sneaking off with the neighborhood kids to play cards and smoke cigars, using her looks and charm to hustle them and make a pretty penny. She was quick to learn the ways of the streets, and the hierarchy of the underworld—sharp, intuitive, and business savvy.
Her defiance only disappointed her parents, and the more Giada was told no, the more she began to rebel, even falling for a kid in the rival motorcycle gang in town. That real knock-the-wind-out-of-you kind of forbidden teenage love. The kind that got her on the back of motorcycles at ungodly hours in leather and low rise jeans she had no business wearing. All for the thrill of the chase and to feel the sea breeze as they cruised down the coast to their favorite out cove. And god, was he gorgeous.
Naturally, the teenage romance was doomed from the start and by the time Giada turned eighteen, she was shipped back to the motherland to be straightened out. She lived with her Zia Teresa outside of Milano to learn the ways of the old country. Her zia taught her all the secrets behind the family recipes, how to sew, tend a garden, make homemade wine, and above all else that the most important thing in this life is family—is blood.
After living in Italy for five years, Giada returned from the fashion capital not only as a woman of tradition, respect and decorum, but with a degree in fashion merchandising. In return, her father gifted her Moda Bella Boutique, not only as a reward for a job well done but as a distraction—a means to keep her busy and out of the family business.
And for a while that’s exactly what Giada did; she kept her cards close and played the long game. Because Giada knew that while there is a queen in the deck, one must always be careful how they play it.
And Giada, she played her hand well. She found a husband with political ties that her father would approve of and married him. She became a dutiful wife, an accomplished designer, and a doting mother to her fourteen year old son, Dario. All while being the first to invite the entire family over for Sunday dinner and a round of Scopa.
It was only once the Santoro patriarch fell ill that he finally began to recognize his daughter's ruthless ambition and could no longer ignore the strength and intelligence she possessed, quietly deeming her a worthy successor to represent his interests in the family business. Giada stayed at his bedside right up until his final breath, not only did he give her his final goodbye in that breath—but his blessing.
And so, in her father’s honor, Giada claimed the Santoro legacy as her own. She started off small offering up her boutique as a stronghold in addition to 30% of the earnings and eventually working her way up the ranks. By thirty-six, Giada was separated from her husband and traded in the picture perfect life she'd crafted for a seat in the Santoro Mafia. She now has earned her place as a Consigliere with a hunger to keep the momentum going and is willing to do just about anything to prove that she too can play with the big boys.
Because Giada was never handed a crown to the family business—she earned it. She earned it with her own two French manicured hands and in a pair of killer Giusseppi Zanotti’s.
And that's what made her dangerous.
headcanons.
Giada is a wine snob. She will not drink anything that hasn’t aged for at least ten years. Her favorite vintage is Chianti Classico specifically the blend her family makes back home in Italy. Bring her a bottle, and it will most certainly be noted and remembered.
While Giada owns Moda Bella which carries a variety of high end fashion pieces, her specialty is designing lingerie and intimates for woman. Her latest line is called Bacini by Gi, and she plans to design a weapon friendly collection in the future.
Her son, her mother, her aunts, and her sisters are the loves of her life. She would do absolutely anything for them no questions asked and should someone mess with any one of them say your prayers. Slow and intimate torture is her style.
On that note, while she typically will delegate physical altercations, Giada did grow up a mafia princepessa and was taught self-defense from a very young age. She has a trainer whom she works out with a couple times a week to keep her sharp and regularly goes to the shooting range. She is rather skilled with her pistol who she lovingly refers to as Donatella.
Her intuition is her superpower—a gift her aunts back in the old country always remind her to use to her to advantage. Therefore, Giada has become rather skilled at reading people, learning their tells, and predicting their next move.
Over the years, Giada has become extremely connected in Southern California and has even planted some roots in Italy and Brazil. She does this by networking and holding on to “favors” to those outside The Santoro Mafia organization. Her network of those in her pocket runs real deep and only has to make a couple of calls to make things go away—usually for a price, if not for the good of the Santoro organization or those in her inner circle. Honestly, its giving some Ursala sea witch vibes, and I’m digging it.
Though Giada's father had antiquated views on women in the mafia, he truly loved all his daughters and only ever wanted the best for them and to keep them safe, believing that the best for them was staying out family matters. Giada knew this and loved him dearly for it as it shaped her into the formidable force she is now. She just wishes with all her heart that he could see her now.
