Summary: Steven Universe is a coming of age story (kind of) about young and enthusiastic Steven. Steven is half human and half gem- an alien race of magic mineral based people. Running for five seasons, each episode explores different themes of navigating problems, relationships of all kinds, and most importantly, growing up.

I feel like most people already know about Steven Universe because of its widespread popularity to this day, but I still want to talk about it because it's a great show and I think it can teach children a lot, especially about queer people. While not exclusively a show about being queer, Steven Universe manages to introduce children to LGBTQ+ themes in really palatable ways with loveable characters. There are a ton of queer relationships shown in a ton of different ways, including one of the most healthy and beautiful romances I've ever seen. In addition, it has one of the few intersex characters I've seen in popular media ever, something that's a really low bar unfortunately ;-;. Aside from that, the different ways characters present and express themselves is really freeing and shows kids they do not have to be limited in their expression. While no way perfect in every form, I think it has a lot of deep themes told with wonderful storytelling.

In particular, the pioneering of Rebcecca Sugar is quite inspiring to me. To my understanding, running a show through Cartoon Network in the 2010s made it difficult to get everything through, but Sugar never gave up on one of the most important queer relations in the show; even calling it their "hill to die on". The show made history by having the first same-sex kiss on an American kid's show, and though the show was cancelled due to this, it was a huge step.

Today I want to talk about one of my favorite online comics ever: this is No One Can Know I Don't Like Sex by creator bloggingboutburgers

This comic series is about the experiences of the creator growing up and existing as an aromantic and asexual individual. Each comic mini talks about their daily life being aroace: the joyful parts, the annoyance of a sex/romance focused world, and all the little moments in between.

As an aromantic and asexual person, I found great joy and relatability in the series. It's super fun and silly at moments in relatable ways; however, the thing I admire most is the creator's more serious comments on how aroace folks are treated. She makes great points about how romantic relationships are often put above all others, and everything, even down to our language has been co-opted to be framed around romance and sex nearly all the time.

Even if you're not aromantic and/or asexual (or maybe especially if you're not), I recommend you check it out to better understand the community.
