live bait | Melisande & Graham
It had been raining so much Melisande had stopped noticing it. The fact that water was her natural habitat probably helped with that- it had never really bothered her in the first place to be pelted by the rain on a daily basis, just reminded her of stormy nights with the clan.
However when the rain stopped, she noticed. For a few brief shining hours Melisande hoped she might get to sing again soon- perhaps even tomorrow night, if the powers that be deemed the park safe enough.
But then her dreams were dashed as rain came down harder and heavier than before; it really was just like being in the ocean, such was the intensity. Luckily Melisande was well equipped to see and hear in such an environment. She heard the tannoy call out for help transporting the werewolves to the higher ground cells and ran over.
There was someone else already there, some old guy- surprise surprise, who here wasnāt an old guy?!- and things seemed to be going okay. Just a bunch of wet, grumpy guys trudging up a hill.
And then the moon started to peek out from behind the clouds and a split second was not enough to think up a decent plan and there were four werewolves a few feet away. Melisande glanced over to the other guy present, and a thought struck fast as the lightening bolts sheād gotten so accustomed to over the past few days; she was a siren. Ā There wasnāt time to consider how dangerous it was.
āAre you dead?!ā She questioned, not caring about her blunt deliveryĀ āif youāre dead that makes this easierā but there wasnāt really time to explain it in full because it hadnāt even been a minute yet and already things were getting vicious. So Melisande just started singing and backing up, watching their heads turn to her.Ā

Graham felt no small amount of relief when the rain finally stopped. And so, like the cruel bitch she was, fate decided to metaphorically flip Graham the bird. Fat, dark rain clouds appeared again so quickly Graham didnāt have time to worry about them, and when they opened up, the downpour was somehow even worse than it had been before. Of course, all it took for him to stay dry was a little lack of effort āthe feeling similar to letting your eyes go unfocusedāand then Graham was intangible. Some other people were not so lucky. He was almost having fun watching them scamper around with their hands over their heads, trying to get to shelter, when he was found and assigned to accompany the werewolves to their individual holding cells with some teenager he didnāt know the name of. The rain must have delayed them though because when the moon started to peak out through the heavy, gray clouds, and suddenly Graham had four transformed werewolves on his hands.
Then, of course, because as mentioned before fate was as mad at Graham as his wife usually was, the teenager heād been assigned to the werewolves with, had to turn out to be a siren.
āDead as a doornail, sweetheart,ā he shouted back over the sudden howling and the crash of thunder. She didnāt seem to be listening though because just a fraction of a second later she opened her mouth and started to sing. The four werewolves had fortunately āor unfortunately, Graham wasnāt sure whichānot gotten far enough that her song didnāt affect them. Graham saw their ears twitch as their heads all swiveled at once towards her direction. It was a small mercy that Graham himself wasnāt affected, the perks of only being a projection of the soul.
āYou sure you know what youāre doing?ā he called out to her, inching closer to her in case the approaching werewolves decided it would be a good idea to lunge. They looked docile enough for now, a little bit like curious puppies, but Graham wasnāt about to start taking chances. āSorry, stupid question. You canāt exactly talk when youāre singing, can you? Thatās alright I can talk for the both of us. Can you get them all into one spot for me? Just, you know, nod once for yes.ā
