me: i wrote my character's backstory
friend: you fucked up a perfectly good oc is what you did. look at it. its got anxiety
ā = holding their hand
They were laying under the stars, on a blanket that they pulled from Ricochet's ship. Ricochet's fingers twisted with Blaises' as his arm wrapped around him. Warm and silent. Perfect.
The waterfall roared quietly in the distance, but it was much more calming than deafening if they were closer. There were few other sounds, anything that lived on Venus being few and far between. It was warm, but not overly so.
Ricochet was pretty sure that, despite his hand being clutched, Blaise had drifted off into sleep. But he shifted, as quietly as he could, propping himself onto his other elbow. He looked down at the white and black painted face of his boyfriend. He always looked innocent, but in that moment, Ricochet was pretty sure that Blaise was the cutest thing he'd ever seen.
"I love you, Peanut" He whispers very quietly, leaning down and pressing his mouth against the side of Blaise's face in a gentle kiss. He tells him often, but he knows it's probably not enough. It's hard for him to be romantic... but he tries.
After he pulls away, he shifts and lays back down, closing his eyes too. He thinks that Blaise is asleep, but silently, his boyfriend's mouth tugs into the smallest bit of a smile.
since I split Diah off of this blog, I think Iām going to make Ricochet and Ash their own blogs, too -- though theyāll probably remain sideblogs. They just have nothing in common and itās kind of silly to RP them on the same blog.
Ricochet uses so much of his light to be invisible + hide that he barely even realizes how damn strong he could probably be if he had any confidence in attempting to be a legitimate Guardian.

āRicochet, you have to stop. You know thatās not true at all.ā Dev tries to assure him. He knows that he has such a low opinion of himself that itās hard to convince him of anything otherwise. That doesnāt mean he wonāt try thought.
āListen, you canāt blame his issues on yourself. Whatever his problem is, itās not your fault. You were good to him. The fact that heād try to hurt you? Because you were late? Normal people donāt do that, Ricochet.ā Blaise had seemed pretty normal in the beginning, but as time went on, he almost became unrecognizable from the innocent warlock theyād first met. Ricochet was simple, and he wasnāt a malicious person. Whatever change was going on inside of Blaise couldnāt have been directly caused by the hunter.
Dev brings his hands up, holding Ricochetās face, making him look towards him. āAnd I donāt want to hear you say you donāt deserve anything good. Because you do.ā
He wants so much to say 'no' again, over and over. Nothing Dev says makes him feel better, but that wasn't the other hunter's fault. His own self doubt was so festering, especially since he'd isolated himself and let it snowball since the explosion with Blaise.
Ricochet knows, deep down, that his husband is making sense. But it was just so hard to actually believe what was being said. He'd more or less already decided that Blaise's fucked up state was his fault, somehow, even though it really didn't make much sense. In a way, he almost felt like he deserved to get hurt, because no matter what he did it just felt like he'd eventually screw up everything he had.
Dev grabs his face and gently pushes it up, and Ricochet's red eyes search his face before they flick down, and inevitably close. "I..." He stops himself from outwardly denying Dev's words anymore, though the doubts are still in his chest, a heavy stone weighing down his heart. He brings his own hands up, putting them on top of Dev's.
"I'm so sorry you have to deal with me." He whispers, feeling stupid on top of everything else. How was Dev not tired of him yet? He swallowed, thoughts starting to seep now over Dev inevitably leaving him, too, even though he knows how stupid that is.
āPlease, Dev.ā He asks, pathetically. āTell me that you wonāt leave.ā
[ slight static can be heard, before Ricochetās voice fades in ]
āOkay, okay. Are you recording?ā
[ affirmative clicking ]
āGood. Okay.ā Ricochet pauses to breathe audibly then, a huff in and out. āHey, Peanutāshit! I already messed it up.ā
[ a pause before he sighs, and he starts again ]
āOkay, second time. Hey, Blaise. Uh. I know that you probably donāt want to hear from me and I really donāt know why Iām even messaging you this. But. But⦠uh. Shit, Iām messing it up again. Shit. Hold on Baby, give me a second.ā
[ the line is quiet static, the recording not ending. there is some slight noises in the background before Ricochetās voice returns ]
āOkay. Third timeās a charm, right?ā
[ Baby whirls and beeps confidently]
āHey, Blaise.ā Ricochet pauses just barely, before he continues on. āI know Iām probably the last person you expect to hear from, but, uh. I just wanted to send you a message. I hope thatās okay.ā
There is a longer pause, but this time, Ricochet doesnāt backtrack.
āIāve been thinking about you a lot. And, uh. I just wanted to tell you. I hope that things get better for you. Iām sure youāre probably really mad at me. And I donāt even know if youāre going to listen to this or accept it when I send it. In fact, Iād be surprised if you did and āā A small grunt. āAnyway. Thatās not important. Sorry.ā
Another small sigh, before his tone gets a bit quieter. He sounds like heās closer to the Ghost now thatās recording the messages. āHey. I really cared for you, okay? You said some things when you were mad and⦠I feel like maybe I need to let you know. I did care about you, PeāBlaise. I really did. And. I wish things could have worked out. I really hope that you find someone who can be everything you wanted from me. And, I āā Thereās just the smallest hint of his voice cracking in that moment. āI know you probably hate me now, but I hope that maybe one day you wonāt. I hope that maybe one day⦠we can⦠talk, and⦠ā
[ Ricochetās voice trails off completely at that point, and after a moment, thereās a gentle comforting trill coming from Baby ]
āShit. Baby, just. Keep that transmission. But. I canāt send it to him.ā
[ more quiet electronic noises can be heard ]
āI still love him, Baby. I still do.ā A quiet, sarcastic laugh. āAm I sad or what?ā
[ she tries to reassure him otherwise, but he just laughs again ]
āEnd the recording. This was a bad idea. He probably doesnāt want to hear what I have to say, anyway.ā
[ after a small moment, the transmission ends completely ]
The hunter just holds Ricochet for awhile, knowing that their conversation isnāt over even though heās not speaking. But when he does speak, he canāt believe what heās saying. āWait, no. You canāt really think that.ā He pulls away just a few inches to look at him. He canāt stare, considering he has no visible eyes, but it gives off the impression. āYou didnāt mess him up. Heās fucked up all on his own.ā
Ricochet was good at messing things up, but heād never done anything to hurt Blaise on purpose. Heād been transparent from the start, putting everything out on the table before they started anything serious. The warlock was completely unstable, a slave to his own jealousy. That isnāt Ricochetās fault. āYou canāt blame yourself for everything that goes wrong. This is all him.ā
"No." He rejects what Dev's saying without even meaning to, but the words feel like they just come to him. "No." He repeats, and then this time, he continues with. "I should have tried to help him when things started to get bad. Maybe if I--"
He trails off. If he what? His thoughts are processing as he's speaking, and he feels lost in them already. "If I wasn't such a coward." He breathes after a pause. He was always a coward. Always running away, literally and not. He'd known something was wrong with Blaise and he'd never really tried to bring it up or talk to him seriously about it because he was too scared of serious conversations.
Ricochet's eyes are closed tight, still, as he adds. "I don't deserve anything good in my life." He adds, again, impulsive. There's a feeling deep in his chest. A longing ache that seems ancient but familiar. He was always going to fuck everything up, forever, and he wasn't sure why he ever pretended otherwise.
emotional stability being a 66% is an absolute lie tho

Dev wants to say heād take Blaise, rough him up a bit for being the way he was. But he was sure the joke wouldnāt go over well, especially since they both know he is a Guardian on another level. He could probably destroy both of them and their Ghosts without breaking a sweat.
Instead he puts his arm around Ricochet, pulling him just a bit closer, hoping the fact that their Light is so close that it comforts him. āI donāt think you should talk to him anymore. Or see him. Or acknowledge him if you see him around.ā Blaise is nothing but bad news when it comes to Ricochet, and the last thing Dev wants is for something to happen to him. āHeās not good for you. Like, at all.ā
Ricochet finds himself moving to lean against Dev, letting out possibly the most pathetic whimper that an exo could manage. His hands move and grab at the other hunter's armor where he can, holding onto him tightly as he closes his eyes.
Part of him knows that Dev is probably right. But he can't bring himself to really accept it. He's quiet for a while before he speaks again. "He said that I was the reason he was messed up." Ricochet admits quietly. "Maybe if I wasn't such a fuck up..."
His words feel stupid, even as he's saying them. No matter what he said at this point, it would probably feel stupid. "Shit, dude, like. I just mess everything up. Always."
Ricochet hesitates, but Dev knows as long as heās patient that eventually heāll talk. Itās just the way he is, dealing with emotions is tough for him. Luckily Dev is always laid back, heād wait forever if thatās what it took for his husband to open up.
His previous thoughts are confirmed pretty quickly when he mentions how he forgot about Blaise, something that had unfortunately been a reoccurring theme. But when he says that he broke things off, Dev is honestly in shock. Heād tried to convince him a million times to let Blaise go, but he never seemed like he would actually do it. āListen, Ricochet, listen.ā The other hunter is on edge, and he needs to be as comforting as possible or else heāll close up again. āYou did the right thing. You needed to get away from him and youāre safe now.ā
He looks him over, trying to see if he has any injuries. For the most part he seems okay, but his cloak and armor has a few scuffs. āDid he hurt you?ā Blaise had a volatile personality, and even though he hadnāt really hurt Ricochet in the past, Dev had always been worried that would change.
Even though Dev's words were pretty much what Ricochet knew he'd hear, he still feels like he wants to reject them. He doesn't feel like he did the right thing, because the right thing couldn't possibly hurt this bad.
When he hears the question, he tenses up for a very short second. His shoulders roll and a quiet 'I-don't-know' sound comes from his throat even though he does know. And, after a second, he answers more truthfully.
"The void was everywhere. It-- it hurt -- but he didn't stop, even when I told him it did." Ricochet knows that it could have been worse. Blaise could have probably dissolved him completely, the way he'd threatened towards the end. But it still didn't matter. Ricochet can still feel a strange numbness to his limbs even now, like a lingering, cold frostbite, even though for the most part he was fine.
Dev has a feeling that whatever Ricochet is talking about, it has to do with Blaise. Theyāve had several long talks about the warlock lately, all usually including the fact that Ricochet needed to break things off with him. Blaise was a ticking time bomb, seemingly normal one moment, but ready to go off at a secondās notice. And heād been getting worse, a lot worse.Ā
Considering how surprisingly decent Ricochet was doing otherwise recently, it was the only thing he could imagine. āTell me what happened.ā He says, crouching down to sit beside him. Dev can feel Ricochetās Light, weak, much dimmer than normal. Whatever happened has really shaken him.
Ricochet's eyes flick away from Dev when he's actually prompted about what happened. Suddenly, he regrets saying anything, feeling like he doesn't want to talk about it. But that's how he worked -- he didn't like to talk about things. He didn't like to open up. He just ran away and bottled things up and didn't deal with them until it overflowed.
But he knows two things. The first was he couldn't run from Dev, even if he tried. The hunter could sense him, and could find him, like he had already.
The second being that once he started to talk about this out loud, it was going to be a mess. His own thoughts were so messy and swirling that it was hard to put anything into words. A looming, black jumble of distress and guilt and worry and regret and --
"I was late meeting him." Ricochet blurts out, trying to speak before his own thoughts freak him out too badly. He doesn't have to specify who he's talking about, he's sure. "He was mad. He was so mad. I. I told him I couldn't do it anymore, and I was scared of him. And he just got worse."
His sentences are kind of choppy as he recalls the situation, bringing his hands to cover his face. He knows that he looks and sounds and is pathetic in that moment. He barely wanted Dev to look at him.
@ghostfragments
Itās not often that Dev gets worried about Ricochet, knowing that he tends to do his own thing most of the time. Missed transmissions were normal, he figures that heās just busy or meeting up with someone else. It happens. Things are always fine.
But after the first day, Dev has a bad feeling that something is definitely up. Ricochet isnāt answering any of his messages and the last heād heard, he was supposed to meet up with Blaise ā and that itself was a recipe for disaster. Knowing how toxic their relationship had been recently, the fact that Blaise was probably the last person thatād seen him made Dev uneasy.
When he doesnāt find the other hunter in his room in the Tower, he defaults to the only other location he could think heād be (as long as he was still in one piece), and that was their place in Cosmodrome. It had been their spot for years, a place that was usually quiet, atop a small building on a cliff, a perfect view over the Mothyards.
And luckily, he is there.
Dev knows something is off right away, Ricochet sitting there quietly with his legs dangling off the roof, not making any attempt to speak or acknowledge him. He makes sure to approach in a way he knows heās there, and doesnāt move to sit by him just yet. āHey.ā He keeps his voice soft, just in case things are really bad. āIāve been trying to contact you since yesterday.ā
He'd been out here for a while now. Hours. Days? He hadn't moved more than a few feet from the same spot since he'd arrived. The sun had set, and it had rose, and it had set again. So yeah -- at least a day. His thoughts were blurred and messy, and he didn't really think about it.
Ricochet could feel Dev before he could see him. The other hunter's light was familiar, feeling like it reached out in invisible wisps to touch Ricochet's own aura. Still, he didn't move from the spot, leaning and staring up at the sky as his limps dangled over the edge of the building aimlessly.
Dev comes to a stop beside him, and Ricochet slowly tilts his head to look up at his husband. The only solid presence in his entire life -- especially now. Still, the thought brings a twisting feeling in his chest; panic and nervousness seeped into his mind.
"Sorry." He says, his voice eerily weak and apologetic. "I..." Baby had informed him that Dev was trying to call the day before, and he'd told her to ignore it, and just hadn't had the energy to answer. He felt miserable and stupid and like he didn't deserve Dev to 'coddle' him.
He lets out a breath, his body slightly shaking. He still didn't physically feel good after the encounter with Blaise's void, and his own mind was such a roller coaster since that he was mentally exhausted as well.
"I really messed up, Dev.ā Ricochet breathes. Part of him knows that the words are stupid; that the hunter would agree with his actions. But he couldnāt stop thinking of Blaise and how the warlock had said he was the one who had fucked him up.
